Time to do something...

Typing this at the local fish and chip shop ☹️

I went to the doctors a few weeks back with a waterworks issue (or so I thought).

After all my blood tests all is ok except for my cholesterol which is high.

I have been recommended to go on a low carb diet (cutting down on potatoes rice pasta and bread).

I’m 17st 9 this morning, 40w.

I think for my health I ought to aim for 14st 34w which is where I was on my wedding day 6.5 years ago.

I’m finding low carb quite difficult to find online unless I look at Atkins but I assume it’s out there.

Also planning to do the couch to 5K. I’ve done half marathons before so I know it’s possible.

Any pointers gratefully received.

Ian

Hello seafrontbloke and welcome to the forum 😊

Good advice from your GP. The other half of low carb is high fat - the two go together. A lot of us follow this approach and, though it is a big change to the standard UK diet, it is very satisfying and filling. I suggest you join the LCHF forum and ask for guidance on getting started healthunlocked.com/lchf-diet

A good way to start here would be joining tomorrow’s weigh in team. You'll get to know a very supportive bunch of people who will appreciate your support, too. Here's the link. If you read the opening post, it will explain all and you can join us in the morning healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

You'll find a list of all the forum activities here healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

I see your post isn't locked. This means that it, and any replies, can be shared around the Internet without your knowledge or consent (see the Twitter and Facebook logos below your post). Hi there seafrontbloke - you may find the Diet Doctors website is a useful resource:

dietdoctor.com/

I found that avoiding the processed carbs (bread, pasta, rice) had a dramatic effect on my weight loss. Things I used instead are savoy cabbage (stir-fried in place of pasta/rice - delicious!), butternut squash (roasted), cubed celeriac - either steamed and mashed or cubed and roasted with olive oil.

Love all of the Diet Doctor cabbage recipes:

dietdoctor.com/low-carb/rec...

The processed carbs don't have the effect of keeping you full for very long. Don't be afraid of fat - in small/measured amounts, it can be your friend! Things like nuts (brazils and almonds) - just a few are all you need.

Try and stay away from take-aways and fast food - they will be causing the most damage to your health (and weight!) :-)
