Hi I am a 49 nana to a beautiful granddaughter and another grandchild on the way. I am suffering excruciating pain from OA and need to loose a few stone before I’m 50 and so I can have knee replacements. So the journey begins today to loose 3 stone!😬

Hello Don_loss2_50 and a very warm welcome to the Weight Loss Forum 😊

Well done on starting your journey today. 👏. Please take a look at the Welcome Newbie Post for advice about how the forum works and all the things we have on offer. Read it carefully as it has lots of important information, and just ask if you have any questions. healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

The best advice I can give is to eat enough. If you are following the NHS 12 Week plan then the 1400/1900 calorie target suggested is a just generic amount, please check your own personal calorie target using the BMI checker, it’s often higher than you think. We always advise starting towards the top of the range, being hungry is the biggest cause of weight loss failure

I also highly recomend coming onto the forum regularly, daily if you can, reading posts and replying to others. Being part of a community is proven to help weight loss. Why not join our daily chat thread ‘What’s Happening Today?’

For your own privacy and safety online we suggest that you lock your posts by selecting ‘followers in my community’ when you write a new post. Please read our security post here. healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Best wishes and have a great first week

Indigo 😊

Dear Nana#,

My right knee is like a warning canary , once I get to a BMI of 30 it hurts! The pains faded away as I lost weight. I have had none in recent months since losing 1 1/2 stone, your message reminded me of that. I am sure that my cartilage is still worn but it can cope without the extra weight.

Good luck with your efforts to lose weight, my knee was a strong motivator as was falling over and badly spraining my ankle. You will be likely to recover much better from your surgery if you are successful with your weight loss.

This is a lovely forum with lots of excellent ideas and support for your plans for long term weight loss.

Hi, good luck, you’ll find a lot of support here. I started in July because I needed to lose weight before they would consider me for a hernia op. Last week GP said I probably didn’t need the op at the moment as with the weight loss the hernia had shrunk. I also have had much reduced pain from arthritic hip. Weight loss may reduce your medical problems too, here’s hoping for you !

Hi, Don_loss2_50 , Welcome.

I am a bit ahead of you - I am 69, (and I have lost two stone with about one to go to my medium-term goal).

Are you a serial dieter - or is this the first time?

I am 58 and my wake up call was an op this Jan for hiatus hernia . The main cause for this being over weight . My knees were also achy . The answer to a lot of my aches and pains was the weight I was carrying. Actually look at the weight you plan to lose or simply pick up a 5kg sack of potatoes and think I am carrying this around . I am now over 18kg lighter . No wonder I couldn't move . This still shocks me .
