A newbie that needs help

Hi I’m new here. After years of stress at work at work I eventually resigned. Bad ways of coping being drinking and smoking. Stopped smoking three years ago. Off the 3 bottles a week spirits. Struggling with weight since drinking 2 to 3 bottles of wine a night. Any suggestions. Thank you

Hi and welcome, Jazzthecat :)

Well done for giving up the cigarettes and the spirits, could you push on to give up the wine too, because I think you'll struggle to lose weight, while drinking so much. Not only is wine calorific, but it will weaken your resolve to eat correctly too. Your GP may be able to refer you for counselling?

Hi Jazzthecat

This is a very friendly forum & many of us have to live with anxiety or stress or depression so theres plent of support and encouragement here.

First of all well done for stopping smoking, its too easy to focus on the negative behaviours we are still using as a coping mechanism rather than the positve steps weve taken or things weve overcome already.

Regarding the weight, i think you may struggle while youre drinking the wine - there are plenty of things much less self destructive you could do rather than drinking like use that energy to fuel you to do the C25K or could you focus your attention elewhere like baking or crafts?

If you involve yourself in this forum there are lots of ideas and challenges to keep your mind occupied.

Have you thought of speaking with support groups such as mind or seeing if theres CBT classes in your area?

Wishing you all the best xx

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I did do a CBT course which initially helped but work got worse. I need the ummph to change my habits. Thought I might walk first before doing the C25K running. Worried about my knees. Ironically it was the cross country run at school where I started smoking wondering at the back with my friend.

Walking the C25K is also a positve start ! As long as youre moving and not sat thinking about the wine!

And there really is lots of lovely people here who will help support you!

Its not easy taking the first stepa nor easy admitting you need tk take them! xx

Walking is a great form of exercise and a good place to start. It is also a very good way of alleviating stress. If you can do it somewhere peaceful and mindfully, listening to the sounds around you and taking some deep breaths (not down the main road maybe :) ), it can be even more relaxing :)

I do agree that you will struggle to loose weight whilst drinking so much wine. You managed to leave the spirits behind, I am sure you could manage to start cutting back on the wine. They are full of empty calories that you could be enjoying so much with some lovely tasty food.

I think moreless' suggestion of talking to your Doctor and getting some counselling is very sound.

Wishing you good luck :)
