Just joined and feeling a bit low and desperate as I have been told by Doctor I need to loose weight as I am in high risk group and my blood pressure is high which I need to bring down. No medication prescribed yet. I just don't know where to start.

Hi there, I am also new so welcome! I would start by looking at your eating habits! I had a nosey on the NHS page and I was surprised as to what I actually ate! And what I could eat that would be better for me! I have been on this page only a day and I already feel motivated to get going again! It is a brilliant platform for motivation and tips as to what to eat and how to exercise! Did your doctor offer you any advice? I find walking can be really helpful? Even if it is only for half an hour but in the fresh air it really helps me feel relaxed :)

Don't feel down, you have come to the right place :-) Maybe start by planning some meals, look at the daily dairy post - it is very helpful :-) Maybe message in the Saturday weigh too - I am sure they would be happy to have you. You will find this forum very helpful :-)

Do you enjoy cooking? I try to follow new and exciting healthy recipes. I find cooking quite therapeutic :-)

Try to work out what is your downfall so you can work on it, emotional eating? portion sizes? too much processed food? Once you know what your downfall is, you can think of strategies to work on it. Mine was definitely my sweet tooth!! Eating so much sugary cereal, buying sweets and chocolate and eating sharing packs by myself in secret and hiding wrappers. I had to admit to myself that this was my problem and come up with a plan. My plan was not to buy sugary stuff, haha. I still eat fruit and honey. I allow sugary things when eating out or at someone's else, but in the company of others, no more bingeing and no more secret eating!! :-)

Isn't it irritating how doctors tell you to lose weight but don't tell you how? If you already knew how to do it, you wouldn't be in the doctor's office being told to lose weight, right?

As others have suggested above, gaining weight (and general unhealthfulness) is more about what you eat rather than how much. Whatever you do will be a lifelong change, which means it's got to be something you can stick with. In other words, there's no point exerting Herculean efforts to "lose weight" if you subsequently go back to eating "normally" and put it all back on again. Your diet needs to change, permanently, and that means your tastes will have to change.

Take a good hard look at what's in your cupboards. You should be seeing mostly fresh ingredients: vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy. If you find yourself staring at lots of plastic packets, snacks, and prepared sauces, you're going to have to figure out how to replace those with proper food.
