Lots of regular posters are doing Low Carb High Fat so I'm sure you'll hear from some of them. Have a look on the LCHF community and/or Diet Doctor website (sorry I don't have the link). I've been eating this way for 7 weeks (not strict keto every day but trying to keep a weekly average of under 30 carbs a day) - feel great and still losing weight. Hopefully Moreless will also reply with a link to her story about how she switched.

Several people here are doing low-carb but not necessarily keto.

There are lots of anecdotal reports of ketogenic (very-low-carb) diets alleviating intractable problems like MS, and it's very frustrating that these interesting results aren't being properly followed up with some solid research. The political howling around low-carb drowns out any attempt at rational discussion.

Have you started your keto diet already? Don't forget to tell us how you get on!

Interesting...I will read further and maybe give it ago.....

It might help my symptoms

I’ve done very low carb by way of induction into low carb high fat, and am embarking on it again over the next couple of weeks. My go-to article for the induction, that might interest you, is on the LCHF forum here: healthunlocked.com/lchf-die...

Let us know how you get on if you do embark on it. Incidentally (and also anecdotally) I have chronic fatigue problems and I have absolutely noticed the positive impact of LCHF.

So pleased to hear it's had some impact on your symptoms, Elf. How about an update on the progress you've made? CFS is a horrible, debilitating condition that mainstream medicine seems unable to help with.

Thanks for the link I will read and digest.....

How do I get to it from the healthunlocked site?

Hi, Redspot, have you read up on EFA's? I have been concentrating on that for some time in my diet and although I can't definitely attribute my lack of further symptoms to it, I am convinced it has helped. :-)

I have been eating very low carb since I started, and don't think I have achieved ketosis as yet . I will keep reading to see if I am doing something wrong and keep trying xx

cheritorrox in reply to Jints1

At minus 1st 7 you're obviously doing something right! There is so much evidence now that high carbs are bad for you that even if not doing keto it's a better way of eating to cut them back. Do you feel well? Are you happy with what you're eating or do you yearn for stuff you shouldn't have? Do you eat 3 times a day? I think you need theAwfulToad or Concerned to comment!

Jints1 profile image
Jints1 in reply to cheritorrox

Hi cherri . I'm doing days of 16/8 have no cravings or major hunger pangs and am also sticking to my calorie count which is why I am losing weight. I'm feeling fine. I do feel guilty when I add fat to my diet and I think this is probably where the problem lies (years of conditioning) I am learning to increase my intake. But I actually don't think I have ever gone full keto which is what I am striving for xx

Hi, have you explored Diet Doctor for recipes?

Jints1 profile image
Jints1 in reply to BridgeGirl

Hi Bridge. Yes I've read diet doctor back to front and anything else i see that mentions it. Apparently sometimes it can take weeks to achieve and I possibly may be partway there. I keep waiting on signs like ketone breath etc which would reassure me but nothing xx

BridgeGirl profile image
BridgeGirlAdministratorSS Supercook2 stone in reply to Jints1

If it's a way of eating that suits you and that you like, then I'd say stick with it, know that it's a healthy approach and that weight loss will come in its own time.

We all learn a hell of a lot of patience round here :D

Do you think it would be a good idea to have some pinned posts for this community? There's so much great info but for anyone coming here new they'll be hard put to find a lot of it e.g. coz it's old or is in replies to posts and not always obvious.

I don't really know much about pinned posts so advise if I'm wrong about what they can be used for. I'd suggest:

*"the theory and the science" - TheAwfulToad has something which also gives links I think

*"Personal experiences" - Moreless for one great example plus easy to find a few more I would think

*"Keto vs just lowering carbs" (bad title) - I'm sure there's stuff around about this too - many keto sites can be quite off-putting and come across as extreme and difficult ... or perhaps this would come under personal experiences?

*"food and recipes" ? with helpful links to other sites e.g. diet doctor plus colleagues own thoughts & ideas

These are just thoughts off the top of my head - if you and admin colleagues think there's some mileage in it perhaps we could throw it open for ideas?

And not just a few - good sign eh?

Steelad's post "your favourite veg & your favourite 3 ways to use it" is a good example (as well as an excellent resource!)

IvanTheHorrible profile image

Most people don't get "ketone breath", at least not for any length of time. It's one of those silly myths that They invented to put people off the idea.

Your body only excretes ketones (in breath and urine) for a short period of time as it adapts to the diet. It then seems to figure out that this is a waste of perfectly good energy, and starts burning them for fuel instead. If you do a urine dipstick test, you'll see your excreted acetoacetate rise very fast during induction and then tail off to virtually nothing over a month or two, even if you go REALLY low-carb.

There is actually no way of telling if you're in ketosis except via a blood test. There are no physical signs except for a lack of carb-cravings. If you're feeling energetic and not-hungry then you must be in ketosis. It's just physics: your body has to be obtaining 1000+ calories/day from your diet, and if they're not coming from carbs then they're coming from fat (and protein, to a lesser extent).

But yeah, I know what you mean about the guilt! I think it happens to most of us.

Jints1 profile image
Jints1 in reply to IvanTheHorrible

Sounds like i should be well in ketosis. Thank you i was beginning to think it was impossible to achieve xx

Its a bad idea to do these types of diets. I would recommend just going for a balanced diet. Keep sugary and processed stuff low.

cheritorrox profile image
cheritorrox in reply to Dvae_201

Whatever approach suits you it's a lifestyle. I think everyone agrees sugar and processed stuff are bad for you. Starchy carbs such as bread rice pasta and spuds are also not great, whereas there's plenty of evidence that fat IS good for you. If you're interested the link below is one of many sources of info:

I have MS too. We need our healthy fats. It's all about balance really. Glad it's working for you. Wishing you health ☘️

I'm doing the Keto lifestyle plan. I believe the science behind it. I've started it recently.

I'm just going through one of the adverse side effects. This is expected during the transition while the body changes from using glucose to fat as an energy source.

I'm sticking with it as I am confident of the future results.

I did a lot of research on Youtube which helped to understand the principles and science which underpin the lifestyle change. This had lead me to believe sugar is the problem not fat.

Keto lifestyle plan.......where do you find that?

in reply to Redspot

Hi, just to guide you to one of the video's on youtube youtube.com/watch?v=57NOU3d... however, please see a good number of video's in other words don't rely on a single video for guidance.

I should have added that I also have started 'intermittent fasting' for 16hrs then I eat during a 8 hour window i.e. 16:8.

I have come to the conclusion that there is a huge amount of advice about many diets (which tends to be contradictory) so my approach is to find a plan which: a) works for me and b) is not difficult to follow c) there is a science behind it (however KETO is controversial).

Good luck in achieving your weight loss goals.

Thanks for the link to 2 Fit Docs! I'm a huge fan of keto/lchf ways of eating but since I stopped eating meat I switched to other diets (WW and SW) to try to lose weight. I'm coming to realise though that eating much lower carb with higher fat works better for me. I'm inspired to try again using fish as an alternative to meat.

IndigoBlue61 profile image
IndigoBlue61 in reply to _aitch_

You can still follow LCHF without eating meat by using dairy, olive oil, nuts etc Keto is slightly more problematic due to to many vegetable proteins containing carbohydrates

Switching to SW is quite a shift with their emphasis on pasta and carbs. . . I follow a Mediterranean diet which is somewhere in between and can be adapted to a a vegetarian lifestyle easily

Good luck

Keto (i.e. Ketogenic) is often referred to as a 'lifesyle' rather than a 'diet'. I recommend you view some of the vidoe's on youtube ....... I loved the one's by "2 Fit Docs" but there are plenty of others.

Hi RedSpot welcome, you will end up finding many people following a keto liffestyle. My husband has for 4 years he lost 60 lbs, I'm keto although by neuro. and endo. insist my carb. level must be higher, I need to gain or maintain weight I'm only 94lbs 5'5. I'm type 1 diabetic and had frequent seizures until starting the keto diet. It has been of such great aid in balancing my insulin levels, I wear a Dexcom 6 which measures y blood levels 24/7. Alarming me of lows or highs my range 80-200. Now my seizures are almost totally controlled by the med's and when I do have one they are not a serious as the past. I wish you the best and know one of the leads will be reaching out, I personally know one that has the same issues as mine and I'll speak with her, if you ever want to chat just leave me a message.

Hi Redspot

I saw this and thought of you ........ youtube.com/watch?v=HUlk0pZ...
