Exercise tips for Osteoarthritis

Hi there, I have Osteoarthritis in my hip and this also affect my knee, which makes a variety of exercises (including walking) painful. Can anyone recommend any exercises that will be good fat burners?

Hi and welcome, Geordie_68 :)

I also have osteoarthritis and have found that by eating non-inflammatory foods, losing the excess weight and gradually building up my exercise, I have overcome the initial hurdles. I went from barely being able to stand, to running a marathon.

However, as important as exercise is for health and well-being, I've never relied on it for fat loss, as diet plays a much bigger part there :)

What you eat will affect burning the fat, but to help you feel better and tone up how about swimming - maybe there's a specific class you could attend? They have one at our local pool here in Spain but I dont know about other countries (sorry - dont know where you live!)

I agree that swimming is a good exercise, as you can move your muscles and joints without putting too much weight on damaged joints and you can do cardio exercise in a pool. But exercise, unless you do massive amounts, doesn't add much to weight loss although it improves your fitness. Finding the right diet will help a lot more.

I do very little exercise these days, and had piled on weight from a combination of factors. I recently went low carb (not keto/very low, but still a huge difference for me) and have lost over 2.5 stone in less than 4 months.

Still not exercising (I'd love to go swimming but there is a long waiting list for the hydro pools here and so they only take really bad cases).

PS to my earlier comment - I know your user name makes country seem obvious but there are Geordies all over the world!

Hi cheritorrox, yes I'm from the UK.

Hi all many thanks for your very helpful comments. You have all helped switch my mind-set and accept that it is the dietary habits that I need to change to maintain a healthy weight, rather than mainly focussing on exercise. Saying that I really do dislike swimming, so I may look at some alternatives, but thank you for the suggestion.

Upside down cycling on the bed. Stretches 10 on each leg or leg raises leading by the movement of the heel of the foot towatds the ceiling. Then to really get the stomach working when lying on the bed quickly move each leg up and down alternating between left and right leg.
