I suffer from depression, I find that when that hits me I eat and eat and eat some more. Then I get dressed I have just ate all that and that I'm fat. Wife daughty and ever father in lay call me fat. So I get down and guess what? Yip eat...

Welcome to our friendly and supportive forum MarcTni

Having a hip replacement at your age is really quite young. Loosing weight would help your hips no end I am sure - I am also sure you know this :)

I personally think that depression can help to make us eat what we shouldn't and then we get fat and then we feel even more depressed, a vicious circle. Something has to change - you are in control of what goes in your mouth, so take control and as you see that you are eating more healthily and beginning to loose weight, the depression just might lift. You could also take a look at the Happiness Celebration here, it isn't everybody's cup of tea and at the moment I don't think any men are taking part, but they have. It helps you to look at the good things in life and be mindful - it can definitely help to change your mind set - just worth looking at even if you don't want to do it on the forum. Are you getting any help from your doctor with regard to the depression?

I am sure that your family calling you names must hurt, do you think they are trying to shock you into doing something about it? Would they be supportive and help you, could you all do it together and make it a family challenge to get healthy?

You have lots of hope, never give up on hope - we are a really supportive bunch but you are the only one that can make the changes. We can be here to answer questions and make suggestions though :)

OK, ....so you are a big lad. That is not the end of the world. Just remind yourself that you are still young (same age as my kids), you have a family who care for you, as far as I know you are not immobile and certainly you can turn things around. Beating yourself up for past mistakes is self destructive; look to the future, and be pleased with yourself for any small successes.

I agree that coping with Depression is a tricky one, and many people will turn to drink ...or drugs, ....or, like so many of us here, to food.... to make ourselves feel better. However, that only works in the short-term, and has knock-on effects .....like your hip pain!

Look for ways of lifting your mood; some people find getting outdoors, walking, or gardening or cycling will help. Others prefer to swim, or sail or fish. Get creative perhaps...lose yourself in writing poetry, painting or wood carving? There are so many things you can do in your spare time, and you can involve your children in some of them too. Good luck for the future!

Hi MarcTni and Welcome 😊 Your post caught my eye; it made me wonder what made you post this now? Why today? ~ could it be because today is the day you're going to turn things around? Is it because today is the day you're going to change your life? You have control of everything ~ the decisions you make, what you put in your mouth and how you react to comments that hurt you. Jump on here and tell us how you're feeling, tell us if you're feeling like you're going to slip into your old habits and we will be here with supportive words. Planning and posting what you intend to eat day by day can be extremely helpful, it can keep you on track, and make you aware that YOU are in control of the food, and not vice versa ~ Lean on us when you need to. Wishing you lots of luck 🤗

Hi MarcTni

I think most things have been offered by all the input from others. But I would like to add one thing. It sounds as though you do not see yourself as empowered to make change and therefore in some way a victim of your circumstances?? That will not help as everything becomes so complicated we don't deal with anything big or small. Try and gain the support from your family by telling them what you want to achieve and asking for their help and giving them an active part in your change. Build on small success and take the time to focus on the positive. Depression can be helped please make sure you ask for what you need from your GP and get a review of meds etc. And perhaps some counselling? Good luck and keep posting you have made a start.

HI MarcTni. Welcome and well done for joining. That's the start of your journey to a better quality of life. You will have ups, downs and roundabouts but keep with it. There are many people on here feeling and thinking along the same lines. I have found reading some success stories about other people's weight loss helps me with motivation. Good luck with your journey and this time next year you can look back with pride.

Hi, I have struggled with depression and insomnia but this c25k is helping, it is giving me another focus and physically tiring me out. This is your journey so take it at your pace is my advise to you. I am just into week 3 and it is not easy , but just think about how this is going to help you , not anyone one else. Also read all the tips, the big one for me was it is going to take a while for all this effort to start showing results, it is not an overnight fix, they don’t exist. Good luck with your journey and as you can tell the group is here to support . 😀

Hi MarcTni well done for joining and for thinking and planning to lose some weight.. I really can relate to how you feel. In 2002 I weighed 17 st. 10lbs I was in a wheel chair, waiting for 2 knee replacements. I was on medication for depression which helped a lot. I was 52 yrs old. Then I had 1st knee replaced at the end of Jan, and because I could then get around a bit on crutches I lost 2 stones before my next op in the June. From then on I lost 7st 7lbs with the help of slimming world. The support I had was brilliant. It took me till 2008 to get to my target but it was worth it. One step at a time and gradually you will do it. Good luck.

It’s hard work....but you CAN do it, Don’t give others the power to send you down.........down.....

Choose your diet plan, ear healthily, count the calories and it w

WILL go......but slowly does it. You have been punished enough, choose freedom!

Hello and welcome. I just want to tell you that my cousin had a hip replacement at around 38 also. So you are not alone in being a relatively young person having a hip replacement. It's hard, I know. I have a bad back that would be completely better if I lost weight. Plus, diabetes runs in my family, so I should really watch my sugars and weight. Does this make it easier? Of course not.

Just being here means that you, like all of us, are not giving up or giving in, but continuing to fight for our health and our lives.
