Tips for holiday

Hi All,

I'm off on my holiday in a couple of weeks time and feeling quite anxious that I am going to completely derail my weightloss so far. I am going to the US for the first time for 2 weeks and although I want to enjoy myself, I also want to make healthy eating choices and not overindulge. I am worried as it sounds like sugar is in everything in the US! I am thinking about eating 2x starters rather a starter and a main as I think the portion sizes will be huge.

Has anyone got any tips? I usually go on holiday to Europe and feel okay about this as I know what food to expect and I don't put on a huge amount. I feel like the US is just made to make you put weight on!

Thanks :)

Hello NoMoreJunk and well done for planning your holiday and how it will work into your Eating Plan. I’ve never been to the States but think they’re pretty good at giving the customer exactly what they want, if you want salad instead of fries for example.

Are you self catering? That makes it easier. When we go away I tend to have just a milky coffee or maybe piece of fruit first thing, then a good lunch and an lighter evening meal, meat or fish with salad for example. I am mindful of portion size, and again, I think in the States they are pretty good about giving you any excess to take away.

But this is a holiday and trying new foods is part of the experience. I’m sure others will be along with other suggestions

Indigo 😊

Thanks IndigoBlue! We are traveling around so saying hotels for the entire time. I think a small breakfast is a good idea. I really want to stick to HFLC over there which will hopefully help. Good idea about asking for swaps for sides!

Hi, No More junk, whatever happens I hope you have a wonderful holiday. Sorry, I can't advise on US food as I have never been but I would think there have to be Americans there trying to lose weight sensibly too. I suppose key is veggies, what sort of veg do they have there and not over indulging on carbs. They are supposed to be very good on customer service there so don't be afraid of asking for less of 1 thing and more of another.

Hope someone who has actually been comes along to advise. :-)

Thanks Ali! I think definitely trying to stick to low carb is a good idea. I am not sure about what veggies they have tbh! I definitely want to try new foods but if I can stick to the HFLC principles and not get distracted by other exciting carbs then hopefully I will be okay.

I am going with friends who don't really like walking too much so I don't think there will be much opportunity for exercise :(

Sounds like a good plan! If your friends are couch potatoes it doesn't mean you have to do the same. You can always go off for a walk around or run in the park, if you're a runner. I would even look into hiring a bicycle if you like cycling. You don't have to be joined at the hip as long as as you spend much of your time with your friends. :-)

I like the sound of going for a run! I can get up a bit earlier and go off for a run in the morning :) I am sure there will be nice parks to job around as we tour!

Hi NoMoreJunk .

I've been to Florida twice and on the second trip we also did a Caribbean Cruise. The customer service we experienced was fantastic and they will go out of their way to please you so while experiencing new foods you can still keep eating LCHF and as IB says they will give you any left overs away with you. You also pick sides separate to your main dish and so many healthy choices are available. There are so many different types of eateries to choose from and you will enjoy the hospitality on offer. The first time we went with our friends who had visited many times before and we walked loads ( husband on a mobility scooter) and I actually lost 6lbs, not intentionally but we were more active than at home. As we were treated so well we decided to go on our own the following year. I wasn't sure how I would manage with hubby and I'm not confident enough to drive on the wrong side of the road so we used public transport and taxis and once again we had a fab trip. The Americans are also very into fitness and there are loads of lovely places for walking, running and cycling. I just wish we could go back and visit more States but hubbys health issues sadly won't allow it. ☹

Have a fantastic holiday, enjoy what America has to offer and you'll be fine.🌞

Thank you, I feel so much better now that I can carry on low carb and have salads etc for sides. I would love to go to Florida, maybe in a couple of years once we have saved up again!
