Calorie range - why is MyFitnessPal different to the NHS calculator

Hi guys. I'm a bit confused. I put my weight, height and goal weight into MyFitnessPal and it says 1320 calories a day. But in the NHS BMI calculator it says 1779-2288. What do I make of that?!

Obviously MyFitnessPal is further complicated by the exercise minus points etc. I'm finding the 1320cal possible, but I've seen some posts on here about how it's unhelpful to eat too little...? Any help would be much appreciated.

Myfitnesspal is notorious for giving low calorie ranges..

NHS BMI is much more realistic and satisfying.

Ah thanks. And what about the standard 1400 cals in the NHS 12 week guide. So much conflicting information! I'm nervous to eat more in case I start putting on weight by mistake...

I trusted the NHS BMI and lost weight, generic numbers don't suit all.. Also as your weight changes... recheck the NHS BMI calculator to adjust as you move down...

If you think about it, it doesn't make sense that one singke figure would suit a 26 year old, weighing 11 stone and wanting to get rid of post-baby weight, and a 62 year old with a lifetime of dieting and 5 stone to lose.

I am disabled, and cannot exercise, so, after losing a stone at 2 pounds a week, I am now losing one pound a week.

Be guided by how you feel, and how much you are losing.

You may lose half a stone of gut-fill and fluid in the first week or two, but after that, decide how much you want to lose and adjust your calorie intake accordingly.

Wow congratulations on your great work so far! Really impressive. This is really good advice and actually totally common sense. I was getting a bit obsessed with counting everything (new to it all) but I'm going to wait a few weeks and see how my progress goes.

I would go with the nhs one it really does work. The 1400 is simply a generic amount used to give people an idea, but the bmi calculator takes into account other factors and a better calorie allowance for each individual

MFP allows to ‘earn’ extra calories through exercise whereas the NHS has these already calculated

Both are just guidelines but at the end of the day if you can lose weight eating more it’s a bonus 😊

Have a read of this if you’re still doubtful healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Hi Supermarmite, I noticed the same differences between the two. I am taking the NHS result to mean that if you stay within that range you would not put weight on, and if you keep to the lower end of the range you should start to lose weight.

I couldn’t survive on 1400 calories a day. I would shake and feel light headed. I eat nearer 2000 a day now and have already lost 8 stone in about 14 months doing that. You have to eat what feels right for you, to some extent, and cut out the rubbish. I exercise most days now and cycle a lot at weekends to keep it going but am finding that I am developing muscle now, where there was fat. One cap can’t fit all as we are all different. Good luck in your endeavours! I feel so much better now!

That's amazing!! You are inspiring. You're right I was starting to feel a bit lightheaded. I did a different type of calculator (TDEE) which projected around 1600 for fat loss so I've manipulated the MFP thing to aim for that. If I don't lose anything I'll move it around a bit. If I still feel rubbish and light headed I'll increase the calories a bit.
