Can anybody suggest a healthy substitute when you crave something hot and buttery like toast or a crumpet. I have a hot drink with Canderel when I just HAVE to have something sweet and a rice cake with Marmite when I HAVE to have something savoury but cant find anything when I yearn for a buttery taste.

For me this is a lifestyle change not a punishment . If you fancy a slice of toast or a crumpet then have it with a lower cal main meal not as a snack . One slice of buttered toast will hardly kill you eaten with a salad with some protein like tuna , lean ham or cottage cheese. I love sweet fruity yogurt so have one like you may like your toast . I won't ban anything I just tag them onto a main meal that I have worked out to be lower in cals than if I wasn't going to have a little something I like .

That sounds like a good idea. Once I know I can have it, I probably wont crave it any more! Thanks for that advice.

Are you having enough to eat?

Yes, I was just going to ask this fattyarbuckle Are you counting calories and if so, how many are you having? Carbohydrate and sugar cravings can be a sign of not enough to eat. Also, don’t be afraid of a little fat, most experts now agree a low fat diet does not help weight loss, fat is essential for balanced nutrition and will help fill you up. 😊

I think maybe I am not spreading my food out enough. I have a good breakfast but not much lunch then hungry by early evening. I am away next week but when I get back I will print off a food diary and fill it in so that my calories are more evenly spread.

If you are following the NHS 12 Week plan then the 1400 calorie target suggested is a just generic amount, it might be worth checking your own target using the BMI checker, it’s often higher than you think. We always advise starting towards the top of the range, being hungry is the biggest cause of weight loss failure

Good luck!

I would never try to replace anything. It only leads to feeling deprived and possible binging later. I would be inclined to buy a packet of crumpets, give most of them to you neibour, children or freind and enjoy eating just one with plenty of butter. Maybe read up about mindful eating before hand and try a mindful eating exercise while you enjoy it.

That seems like a good idea so long as it isnt one of those giant crumpets! I will try that as a treat to look forward to. Thanks

I agree with comments already made - have a crumpet and butter just count the calories in, a crumpet can be around 95 cals (depends on which you buy) and 10g of butter is 70 cals - 165 cals is not a lot to curb a craving in a controlled way! You could even substitute for peanut butter for less cals and more nutrition!!!! :)

I have 2 crumpets about 5 sometimes 6 times a week. I don't use butter because I can't so put on flora and have a piece of fruit mainly a banana. I don't see anything wrong with eating a little of what you enjoy as long at the end of the day it's not over run your calorie allowance. :) xx

On days when I do not have a proper meat and vegetables meal, I eat rice cakes with almond or cashew butter and yeast extract.

Really wow I never knew that. Unfortunately due to health and dietary problems the crumpets are the only thing my stomach seems to be happy with. I will check it out. Thanks for the heads up. :)

I have gluten intolerance.

Why not just have something hot and buttery? :)

Obviously crumpets are out, but a cheese omelette usually works for me. If you want something sweet, I can recommend a coffee with lots of cream (and perhaps a shot of whisky or Bailey's if the sun is over the yardarm).

By the way, I have to agree with Hidden about the rice cake. Try rye crackers instead (I believe these are OK for gluten-intolerant people too).

Does it really? Just goes to show how hard these things are to predict! Glycemic load per cracker seems lower than rice cakes though. How about rye bread then? IIRC it's pretty low.
