Confessions - how to get past self-destruct times

LynPen profile image
10 Replies

How can I stop myself when I fall into self-destruct mode? I go crazy, eating til I feel ill. I know it's mad, but when I'm like this, I just carry on eating til I go to bed. Next morning I feel terrible - and logical again - and try to draw a line and be sensible. I lost 4 stone in 2010, and have put 1 stone back on, and worry that the other 3 stones are coming back too, if I can't get a grip.

Hi LynPen and welcome.

For starters you may want to have a look at these. The Weekly Strugglers' Club where people vent or reaffirm what they're going to do better or get feedback on how you might be able to do things differently...

Also the Monthly Maintainers' Club may be of interest. Even maintainers have off days, weeks and months. You'll get a good insight in to how you're not alone and how others like yourself are finding ways to put the brakes on any weight gain and what others are doing to keep it off....

Why not try and get a grip of what you're going to eat today and join in with today's Daily Diary where we write down what we're going to eat today. It can make a big difference as to how we stick to a plan when we say it out aloud. You can receive constructive feedback on what you're eating (where it's pertinent) and pinch other people's ideas and recipes.

There's a lot more here which an administrator will shortly explain.

Good luck... you can do it :) :)

Hi and welcome, LynPen :)

Sometimes, the blame that we attribute to our out of control eating, is not actually a lack of willpower, but our choice of foods. We are hardwired to aim for sweet, carby foods, as they will give us a quick fix, in times of need, but those foods also mess with our blood sugar/insulin levels and will stop us from feeling full and encourage us to eat more. By changing/eliminating high GI carbs, especially sugar, we can regain control. Have a look at these

Am sure they will, definitely going to look into low carbs & healthy high fats. Would like to try get balance on my macros when look into it more. So far have worked out 35% fats ..... maybe 35% protein & 30% carbs ? Is there a recommended amount out there do you know?

I was given 60:20:20, when I started out. 60% fat, and 20% each of protein and carbs, but, to be honest, I never counted, because it can become obsessive. I preferred to eliminate high GI carbs from my diet, while I was losing weight, then re-introduced milk, some root veg and legumes back in for maintenance. I still never eat bread, pasta, rice, white potatoes, or processed foods.

Ok thanks for that moreless know what you mean by getting obsessive am still trying to find my way for what works for me. Interested in low. GI foods too to keep blood sugars at bay 👌🏻 Thanks again

Hi Lyn, I know that feeling so well! I would go on binges - head to the shops, buy a bag full of food and gorge on the lot. I was forever hiding wrappers or half eaten cake at the back of a cupboard.

Ive started to realise that although the vicious cycle of restriction and then bingeing does you no good and causes a lot of obsession with food, really my main issue was how I felt about myself and my life. Posting on here has taken me out of the shadows - its only online but its the first step in being seen. Ive been hiding for a very long time. Ive also started running and I think its ignigted something in me...I want to do it! I havent wanted to do exercise EVER 😂 And just three weeks in, its improving my mental health already.

Perhaps you identify with this? Is there an emotional reason behind your self destruction? If you can figure it out and start facing it, you might be able to give up your crutch (the food).

Also, trying to find exercise that you like. Even brisk walking with your favourite music playing and pushing yourself to go a bit further each time is worthwhile. Give yourself something to be proud of.

Lastly Ive been factoring in a 'feast' day where I have extra calories (because I 'fasted' for two days earlier in the week (I do a weekly calorie allowance and mix it up across the week). I know then that if I stick to it I get a reward. You know what though, yesterday I felt heavy and bloated and didnt even eat the planned Chinese takeaway for dinner (passing up a takeaway has never happened before) - I think stuffing my face is starting to loose its appeal. My mindset is changing 🎉😁

I'm not sure if any of that is relevant to you but hopefully it helps. Good luck 😊
