Hi everyone, I’ve recently joined Slimming World and lost 12lbs

Portion sizes aren’t an issue with SW as long as it’s the right stuff you eat

Just wondering what anyone thinks about this!?!?

Thank you 😊

Well done on your weight loss.

That doesn't make sense to me. You certainly can overeat on good stuff. Why do they say that? Does it make sense to you?

What do they describe as the right stuff? Foods aren't good and bad. We need to learn to have the right balance of nutrients to keep us healthy, then our weight will find a healthy level.

That's why there members stay on slimming world. There seems to be a feeling on SW that certain foods you can eat as much as you like. People return time and time again having not been taught the basic of portion size is so KEY to your goal.

Hi LizQ, I was a member of SW for a few years and although it allows unlimited amounts of free foods and restricts “bad foods “ it does work on a calorie deficit in that you get very full on fewer calories. I know people who absolutely love SW and their life is definitely better for it so it’s what works for you. For me I found that I lost perspective on what a normal portion looks like and with a combination of high stress and poor work life balance, I had retrained my body and mind to stuff myself silly with the free stuff and think it was normal- I was not in control with SW and have given it up in favour of simple calorie counting. For me I needed to relearn normal portion sizes and also feel the difference between feeling empty and feeling hungry.

It’s what suits you though at the end of the day but in my opinion SW doesn’t teach you portion control in general which for me seems to be the key to shifting the weight.

Good luck 👍🏻👍🏻

¿Do you need to loose more weight, or do you you now need a maintenance methodology?

Hi LizQ , I did the 1st time SW about 11 years ago & successfully lost quite a lot of weight. I rejoined several times but put all the weight back on.

My problem with the no portion size of free foods was that I took this literally & was eating triple sized portions of pasta & rice etc.

I’m now calorie counting & trying to make better food choices.

Good luck

Do you mean that SW includes those heavy carbs as foods you don't have to count?

Iwilldothisthisyear profile image
Iwilldothisthisyear2kgRestart Feb 2024Restart June 2023 in reply to BridgeGirl

Yes , you can have as much dried pasta & rice as you like but bread , cereal etc is restricted.

BridgeGirl profile image

Well I never. As I say, I've never been involved with SW but that suggests to me that it misses out on some vital information about food values. I suppose, as Ann_get_it_going says, weight loss comes from calorie deficit, but it sounds like a missed opportunity for members to learn so much more

My biggest problem was learning what a proper portion size was again.

I now always measure pasta etc.

Yes pasta, rice and potatoes are syn free and you can eat what you want but SW do encourage you to eat lots of Super Speed Foods which are your fruit and veg but some veg and fruit are better than others. I always found it worked for me but I agree about relearning portion control and this is why I have come away from it.

BridgeGirl profile image
BridgeGirlAdministratorSS Supercook2 stone in reply to Munchkin_H

I also have difficulty with the term "syn". Foods aren't good or bad and that term seems to me to perpetuate a skewed relationship with food as the enemy. But I think I'd better wind up on this one as I know many people are happy with SW

Wouldn't work for me either, large portions of rice or pasta would give me a terrible tummy ache. They'd be horrified at the small portions of high fat food I eat! Still different things work for different people and I think with the slimming clubs it depends very much on the individual group leader. I did give SW a go for a few weeks some years ago and didn't like the over reliance on low fat processed "treats" but sounds like they might have changed this now if they're encouraging veg and fruit.

Well done. I was with slimming world and lost weight and then put it on again although I was sticking to their programme. I'm sure it was me doing something wrong or not understanding. However, this is just to say that if the same happens to you then the NHS calorie counting programme certainly works for me. Good luck

Google search while searching about pearl barley.

BridgeGirl profile image
BridgeGirlAdministratorSS Supercook2 stone in reply to paul01603

Thank you.

You've reminded me that I got some pearl barley last week and still haven't used it. I'm aiming to try foods I've never eaten or rarely cook, including ones that I "don't like": barley is in the last of these categories. There's a mushroom "risotto" recipe on the pack which I'm going to try: will probably add some spinach

Very high souce of carbs per gram. 44g carbs per cup & 6g of fiber per cup.

Thanks for that info. I see it has a low Gi rating of 25

I can't afford to go to slimming World, so I'm following the diet and recording my weight on here as well as joining in the discussion. It's slower than going to group as I'm not as strict with myself as I should be, but my weight is heading in the right direction, so happy with that and this app/forum is excellent.

Slow is great that means you just under what you need. Which mean less chance of head hunger taking over.

There's always support here for people who can't or don't want to join a group.

I hope you'll log in again to Tuesday's weigh-in :)

Learning portion size is key to your long term goal. Larger portions means more calories . You will need to watch the amount of rice and pasta you eat. But well done on you weight loss so far.

Hi there, glad you found something you can stick with and it's working for you. I agree with others on portion sizes. I wrote on here just last week it's not what I eat but the amount. By buying and using a diet plate I now find it easier to control my portions which still allows me to eat things like pasta, rice potatoes etc but in way smaller portions than before.

But it goes without saying sweet stuff and alcohol if not stopped altogether needs serious reduction.

For me it's never been rocket science you eat more energy than you extend you gain weight. So Imo portion size is very important. For example I have two vegetarian who are very overweight. While I think no food is a sin you do need to watch your portion sizes and count the calories if you only eat fruit and veg all day long. All foods contain calories. But I'm happy your losing weight but has we know what works for one does not work for everyone. Keep up the great work :)
