Hello everyone

What a cunning foe is a simple Malteser. I guess their not called Maltesers for nothing. I'm constantly being teased by them.

I want to be honest as that's how folks break habits I guess. Even though I've not stepped outside my 3 meals a day I must tell you what these consisted of when my wife was working her sleep in on call duty at work.

350gram of Maltesers and 6 packs of refreshers along with 9 crumpets and butter.

For some dinner foods it's been the same.

This only got out of hand in the last 2 weeks but even now my heads saying eat the same tonight after work.

It's habit I guess but also odd as it hurts my body. I just hours of lost sleep due to indigestion. I don't enjoy it but there we are.

Have a lovely day everyone

Very honest to come on and share what has been causing you difficulties. I guess the big thing now is to make sure there are no Maltesers in the house then it is that much more difficult to eat them.

Are Maltesers better than sleep - I doubt it. Seems the refreshers didn't cure the indigestion either.

Now you have identified your problem are you ready to ditch it?

Absolutely. However I've learned over the last 2 years that there are somethings in life that are simple for others to over come than oneself. I've done a lot of work in giving up drink, drugs and fags which I did all at the same time. I think the food is oddly the hardest of them all.

You have done so well to overcome all that you have, but I do totally agree, some find it easier than others and if mslteasers were in my house, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself eating the lot. Far safer not to have them in at all.

A bit if forward planning is required for when your wife is not there me thinks 🤔

It is hard Mr Joshua because it is also an addiction, especially to carbohydrates - your beloved Maltesers. My husband also loves them and can easily down a box! Thankfully I can now eat one and not come back for a second, or tenth!

You have done amazingly well with what you have done - just luck with this last one.

The trouble with sugar, MrJ, is that once it gets its grip on us, it's very reluctant to let go. Just you put it firmly in it's place, well away from you and try forward planning, to have healthy meals, sitting ready in your freezer, for the next time your wife's on night duty :)

Good luck! :)

Hang in there.come here when you feel like that and can't sleep.I'm here during your night time.

Hi, MrJoshua , is your wife a Maltesers and crumpets fan? If not, best not to have them in the house. I may be a bit like you in that I haven't got much restraint, so once setting about this healthy eating and weight reducing business, I knew there were certain things I couldn't have in the house. I live alone so have no-one else to account to/negotiate with. If your wife is a real Maltesers fan too, maybe she could eat them at work or on her journey to and from, so there's no need to have them around.

As you say, it's habit, and no-one can do anything about that except you.

Some things are just so moreish aren't they! Is there something else that is small and treaty which you could have so you don't feel deprived but which won't wreck your sleep and resolve?

small fruit (not grapes) and cherry tomatoes

Aww man I have fallen to the temptation of those epic little sweets... and the crumpets....at one point I ate 12 in a row and used about 50% of a block of butter..... so good but I hear you about the pain!

Good skills for being honest! Glad they were tasty and now jump back on the horse as they say :)

Tis the season and all but you got this!! xx

At the risk of sounding sensible and boring but have you tried committing to a planned menu. I found/still find that if I write down what I'm going to eat then I'm more likely to do just that.

Of course I'm talking about our Daily Diary...

Good luck whichever path you choose.

Admitting we have eaten the wrong food is half the battle. I wonder if healthy snacks would lessen your craving for sugary food, like almonds or boiled egg etc.

I like dry fruit so will look into that

How are you holding up tonight?? I'll be around till 6:00 am your time,I think.be good and practice self restraint.

Like Tiggerr has mentioned for me to stay on track I need to have a meal plan and follow it. If I don’t then I’m much more likely to eat what ever I fancy or what’s most convenient, which sometimes is worse than what I fancy 😖 Repetition can also help so having the same “good” breakfast and lunch means you’ve only got dinner to worry about and that’s where the meal plan for me can work wonders.

Just a thought, on the nights your wife is at home if you feel you eat more healthy then is there any chance you or she could cook a bit more of what your having and put it in the freezer for when she is working nights? Then you’ve got your meal planned 🤗

If you like malteasers, challenge yourself to make a low calorie alternative. That way if you do buckle then at least it'll be better for you.

If baking isn't your thing, try a supermarket own brand equivalent as these often have less sugar as they're cheaper to make. Don't forget to buy smaller bags that you won't be tempted to open quickly!

An open bag is too much temptation but sealed ones are easier to avoid. Maybe!

Temptation is the worst when others leave that devil in the fridge. My daughter left the core and three petals of a chocolate orange in the fridge, so yes I failed and ate the core though it was very small.

Been there done that as far as chocolate goes :):) --my solution as others say is not to have them in the house. Sometimes I bribe myself and say yes you can have a bar of chocolate but you need to go walk to the shop (15min) to buy it-and often now I can't be bothered!!!!

As for crumpets, it's probably more about what you put on them. I stick with marmite no butter now -so I'm far less likely to eat 9!

Small steps and changes that you build and keep long-term are far more influential than the occasional night of unhealthy eating.(I'm still trying to learn not to beat myself up over those).
