Needing support please

Hi I've been waiting for back surgery for some months and have had it cancelled 3 times. This week I got as far as pre-op assessment. Then yesterday I got a call from a very insensitive lady telling me my operation was off because my BMI is too high. Nobody said this before. I was devastated. I asked how much I need to lose before op and she just said lots!

My GP says it is because NHS sent me to hospital with no ICU and I am high risk. I have poor mobility so will need to concentrate on diet.

I need support and tips please. I am hoping to start swimming. I feel so down on myself. Thanks in advance. 😔

Welcome to the forum Needpositivity , I am so sorry to hear about your operation and the horrible way you have been dealt with.

You have come to the right place, we are very supportive here. You will hear from one of the Administrators soon and they will give you lots of information. I am sure that moreless will invite you to join the Newbie Club for October.

The good news is that you can loose weight by healthy eating alone, you don't need to exercise, but of course the swimming will be great for you.

Most of us on here started by following the NHS 12 week plan - Calorie Counting the food that you eat daily.

I would suggest that once Admin have 'spoken' to you, you carefully read all the information they give you, get yourself a notebook/journal and write down everything that you eat. Get rid of any temptation in the house and make sure you have plenty of healthy choices in your cupboards. Join a weigh in on the forum, you will get loads of support.

Most importantly, join in with the chats and get to know people, shout out if you are having a bad day and ask questions if you don't understand something. This really is a great forum full of very supportive people.

Wishing you good luck on you journey :)

Thanks lots of great advice. Look forward to reading posts I guess you don't feel so alone then.

Hi and welcome to the forum Needpositivity I am so sorry to hear about your operation and the way you have been spoken to - we are not medically qualified on here and I have to confess to not knowing what an ICU is :O So glad you have spoken to your GP ;)

Swimming sounds like a good option for you for exercise due to your mobility :)

lucigret has given you some great information as always ;)

I would like to invite you to join our Newbie Club, which we hope will be a good place for you to connect with members, who are also just starting out, or re-starting.

If you just post a few words on the October Newbie Club thread to introduce yourself and respond to others there you will soon feel part of the club.

Follow this link to the Newbie club: healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Please read all the information carefully, it is very useful and can be referred to whenever you want to check something.

It just remains for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Welcome Needpositivity

I'm sorry to hear about your recent experiences... 🙁

Losing weight will help you in so many ways, not only in terms of being able to have the operation that you need. Quite rightly hospital have decided that it would be too risky to give you an anaesthetic. I'm very sorry to hear that you where spoken to in such an insensitive manner and that you weren't given more support, advice and information about how much weight you need to lose or how to do that! Let's hope that we can help you!

I have a disability which severely impacts on my mobility. I use a wheelchair outside of the house.

It is possible to lose weight without any exercise whatsoever, however, it will mean that you need to make more of an effort with regards to your diet - reducing calorie intake and portion sizes.

I started my weight loss journey at 14 stone - 5 and a half years ago (February 2012). I was 49 years old and had been trying to lose weight all of my life since the age of 9.

I managed to lose 4.5 stone in 2 and a half years through calorie counting and logging/weighing all of my food.

Then re-gained some, lost some again and have now managed to more or less maintain for the past 6 months.

BUT... ideally I would love to drop another stone and maintain there.

The one thing that I realised very early on in my journey was that I was just eating FAR TOO MUCH! I was a short, middle aged, sedentary female and I was eating the same as 5ft 9" active man (my now husband!).

No wonder I was piling on the weight!

Here are a few of my past posts which I hope you will find helpful and inspiring. I won't try and tell you that my journey was easy - and you'll see that there were many blips along the way, but 5 years down the line, I feel about 20 years younger than I did when I was lugging around 4 stone more.

Please do pop back to the forums and share your journey with us - we are here for you, day and night and happy to share your success or support you when you need it.
