Hello fellow weight losers! Are you missing me?

So I found us a lovely looking hotel in central Malaga. Right in the heart of the city and close to all the tourist attractions. I hate the large chain hotels and wherever possible will look for a smaller boutique style hotel which is what this one was. It has 41 rooms.

Although I am able to walk, I use a wheelchair for longer distances. Therefore access isn't such an issue for me. However I suddenly thought a week before the holiday but I should perhaps check that the hotel did have a lift! I emailed the hotel and asked them "do you have an elevator?". They replied "yes there is an elevator ", but attached to the email response was a picture of the hotel entrance with about six steps. I have an electric wheelchair which I use to travel with which is much lighter than my heavy duty 120 kg wheelchair that I have at home thanks mainly to the fact it is powered by a lithium battery. I showed my husband a picture and we discussed the stairs and his ability to lift my wheelchair up and down them in the event that there was no alternative route.

When we arrived at the hotel that was indeed an elevator. There were also six steps between the entrance door and the elevator and the reception desk was on the first floor.

My husband dutifully lifted the wheelchair up the steps and we proceeded to the first floor where we checked in. Our bedroom was on the third floor. It has the most amazing view of one of the main squares in the centre of Malaga, Place de la Constitution. The hotel room, friendly staff, lovely breakfast - more than made up for the lack of access.

Until today.

We returned to the hotel after our day out only to find a sign on the left saying "out of order". Oh no! My poor husband had to lug the wheelchair up the six steps and then up a further 15 steps to the first floor! That would've been bad enough except the stairs also go up a curve! Thankfully from the first floor we were able to transfer to a service left to continue our journey to the third floor.

Tonight, not wanting to kill my husband by him falling down the stairs with my wheelchair, we decided to dine very close to the hotel. Not only did I have to negotiate a flight of stairs, it was a fairly decent walk for my limited capabilities.

My Fitbit is very happy as for the first time during the short break I have achieved my 3000 step daily goal.

We return home tomorrow (thankfully) as I don't think carrying the wheelchair up and down the stairs would be sensible or safe.

I am grateful for the fact that I am able to walk, albeit short distances as well as manage a flight of stairs. Had I been unable to do so this wouldn't have been a great end to our wonderful holiday.

Malaga is an amazing City! There is so much to see and do and it is all within easy walking distance. For us it was just a two hour 20 minute flight from the UK and the weather has been amazing mostly between 25 and 28° each day. There are lots of really lovely museums, lots of history, and many wonderful places to enjoy the lovely Spanish food!

Hi Pineapple,

Sounds like it was all a great adventure and thank goodness your husband survived all those stairs carrying the wheelchair. Great news that you did 3000 steps.

You are a star!

We have yet to leave! We will make sure we have left plenty of time tomorrow to descend the stairs safely (complete with suitcase).

I will ensure my husband gets some help to lift the wheelchair down As I think neither the wheelchair or him would survive falling from top to bottom!

Of course the lift might be repaired by tomorrow morning… But, this is Spain and things tend to happen at a somewhat slower pace!

I love Malaga, Pineapple, we have a holiday home just outside Marbella, but the city is nicer to visit at this time of year - it's cooler ;)
