Feeling lost

Hi I am 39yrs old and have had a lot of operations. I am now on so much medication and going through the menopause. I crave sugar and can't lose weight. I feel alone and wondered if there is any one who is struggling like me. I need to do something but lose a bit and then put it back on.

Sounds like you have had a difficult time but things are now on the up.

I had very strong cravings for sugar and carbs until the diabetic nurse explained to me that sugar and potatoes rice pasta and bread all spike your sugar level . When the level falls you then get cravings for more.

I bought the 8 week blood sugar diet book and it gave fantastic info and advice. I was pre diabetic but wanted to avoid progressing to full blown diabetes

Within 48 hours of going cold turkey and cutting these foods from my diet as well as sugar the cravings totally disappeared

I've been struggling with my weight for quite a while now and also crave sweet things so I got the 8 week blood sugar diet book and have cut out sugar and starchy carbs for the last two days. I'm drinking lots more water than I used to as I didn't drink enough and the worst side effect is a headache but I know that will go as my body adapts. The book is very interesting and a wake up call! Xx

Hi, try not to stress too much, its not the 'falling of the waggon' thats important it the 'climbing back up'. Remember that as a small child we all fell down a lot before we learned to walk, needing a helping hand along the way and not very steady on our feet for some time.

Changing out eating habits and life choices is even harder, but you are not alone. Look through the groups and see if there is one that fills your needs.

I struggle and have to plan meals like a military operation if not or hubby cooks we fall back on old trusty favourites or worse still nibbling :)

When i crave sugar i have a digestive at 60 cals, (included in my allowance ) or a piece of 70% chocolate, to stop my self from eating the whole bar i have to divide it Into squares (when i am not hearing the Syrians song) wrap it in foil and stick a label with the calories on it then put it all in a box and place it at the back of the cupboard with something in front to make me slow down and think before i eat it. Some times only a boiled sweet will do, i do the same thing , calorie sticker and then put in small bags.

Sometimes distraction works like brushing my teeth, if i still feel the craving then maybe its my body telling me something isn't right, it might be iron deficiency.

The truth is people can give suggestions and what works for them or what they have tried but only you can find out what works for you.

I try to see it as an adventure, 'there be dragons out there'. I don't take myself too seriously, I try to see the humour.

Be kind to yourself, we will always be kind to you.

By the way i have only lost 8lb since February whilst friend have lost several stones. Life is not fare and our bodies are all different. If a famine ever hits the uk i will be one of the survivors.

Ps the 8 week blood sugar diet works for some but i did it for the last 3 months with only a 2lb loss which could be water fluctuation. Such is life :)

Just coming up to my 14 kg loss and only 6 kg to go.

First time I have lost weight for 20 years and I'm feeling great

I will stick to this style of eating but when I get to goal may have a few glasses of red wine

I am waiting for blood test result which will hopefully show and confirm the turn around I've made

Sugar cravings can be a struggle, and even more difficult during the menopause @Jo-Grant

It's a cycle as explained above, so reducing sugar and white carbs as much as possible is the best way. But I know it's tough 😕

As far as your problems with losing weight before do you even know if you have ever been eating the right amount of calories before. I always used to eat less and less all the time thinking it will help me lose weight eventually because I have always wanted to lose a bit of weight. But this was my problem, as I was only eating around 1000 Cals a day. Not eating enough calories makes your body think that you are starving it and turns what your eating into body fat and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does so it stops you from losing weight and sometimes puts weight on instead. This was why I never lost weight, so do make sure you check how many calories you should eat on the NHS bmi calculator to be able to lose weight safely and make sure you at least eat this amount daily.
