OLD CODGER NEEDS A HELPING HAND

Hi

I am male, aged 72 years, 5' 8" in height and weighing 93 kg. I have recently been diagnosed with heart failure and I am trying to lose weight. Despite cutting out virtually all carbs, all processed food, sweets and snacks and walking whenever I can, my weight is staying static. What else do I need to do?

Welcome to the forum. There are quite a few of us oldies on the forum. I'm 77 next week and managed to lose the weight I wanted to by counting calories and receiving the fantastic support you get here. One of the admins will be along probably in the morning and give you lots of useful info. As a start check out your calorie range using th NHS BMI checker. You'll be surprised at how wide the range is for a steady weight loss. You will find a regime that works for you. Stay active on the forum where there is always a listening ear. Good luck. I'll watch out for your progress.🤗

I am just a little younger than you and have improved my health no end in just 12 weeks. I have been able to reduce my hypertension medication by one tab and my blood sugar level has returned to normal, and I have lost 12 kg

The first thing to do is to note every mouthful you take and to count the calories. You will be surprised how little things add up e.g. Cups of tea with milk and coffee with milk, the odd snack

Next examine portion size. Are your portions too big?

Are you eating between meals?

If so don't!

There is a super calorie counted recipe book for the 8 weeks blood sugar diet with excellent tasty recipes which are calorie counted . The 8 week blood sugar diet book by Dr Michael Moseley also has a lot of nutritional information which is very helpful even if you don't want to follow that diet

Are you walking enough? Try to walk at least 10000 steps a day as recommended by the American Heart Association. You can build up to this by increasing your step count on a weekly basis say by 500 a week

Before I found uphill walking a strain but now no trouble.

A fit bit is a great aid as it counts your steps records your calorie intake ( lists calorie content of food) and calculates calories in and calories out . You need a deficit to lose weight.

Take the scientific approach and the weight will drop off

Best wishes for your success

It can take a while for the Doctors to get the balance of the medicines right, and some of these can make you retain fluid (which weighs heavy), so you might be losing fat even if the scales don't show much change. Don't be disheartened - keep at it - it is so worth it.
