Hi I'm New

Hi, I'm new here. Have over 14 stone to lose and feel quite daunted and lost. My GP has told me I'm pre-diabetic and that if I lose weight I might be able to head off type 2 diabetes which has really woken me up and stirred me into action. My mindset has been that I have so much weight to lose I will never do it, so I don't even try. Now I have to change my ways !!!

    You may find this post about the Blood Sugar Diet useful.


    There is a Facebook page which I belong to where people have managed to reverse the symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes and others (pre-diabetic) have reduced their blood sugars.

    I just found it a wonderful way to lose weight!!

    Followed strictly, you can expect to lose about 10% of your total body weight in the 8 weeks.

  • The problem is (from what I've learned from the Facebook page) is that doctors often don't really give much guidance to anyone at risk of developing diabetes other than "eat a healthy and balanced diet".

    BUT the processed carbs (bread, pasta, rice, lots of ready made meals, sauces and condiments with added sugar) fuel blood sugar levels.

    The other thing to try and get under control is the snacking in between meals - as this doesn't give the body chance to properly regulate insulin levels and your pancreas ceases working properly!

  • Do you use Facebook at all? You'd gain a lot from the group. Michael Mosley's book is a really easy and interesting read and makes following the BSD much easier. Easy to pick up a second hand copy via the website that wells everything beginning with "A"!

  • Hi jenslastattempt and welcome.

    First of all, don’t look at the bigger picture, take it in small steps, say half a stone at a time, whichever will make it easier for you and take the pressure off. I take it one day at a time and one meal at time because I become overwhelmed with it all. It may be worth asking your GP at what weight you need to be to take you out of the pre-diabetic zone and use that as a first target weight.

    Also ask your GP if they have a pre-diabetic programme you could join. There is a big push by the NHS in catching people to educate them in healthy lifestyles before they reach the diabetes stage.

    Meanwhile gather as much information as you can, diabetes uk is a good website, it also provides some gentle exercises that can be done in the home as well as tips on how to look out for those refined and hidden sugars.

    You can do it. This forum offers great support and you are not alone. Good luck.

    I suggest you give yourself small targets of say half a stone at a time over several weeks as it can be quite daunting looking at the overall picture.

    Keep active on this form and you'll get all the help and support you could ask for.

  • Hi there, I don't think I can add much to the advice above it is good advice. One thing I will say is that you are not alone, there are quite a few of us on here in the same boat, me included. I got the same warning from the doctors as you in January. Six stone lighter I am due to get retested next week. Sugar and processed carbs are our enemies when prediabetic, start by cutting these out where you can. Good luck with it. James

  • Hi, welcome!! You do need to change your mindset - you can do this, you won't be perfect but every step forward will help. Because you have a lot of weight to lose like I did you will see big changes - to your energy, to your clothes, skin, hair. It is exciting!! I was 23 stone so know how you feel, if you start today you will be in smaller clothes by Christmas and every lb off will feel amazing. I shall follow you and support your progress. 🤞

  • Thank you so much. I am also 23 stone and have been too ashamed to say it before even though it's pretty obvious. I have decided this is my time I have tried so many different diets and fads but at last have come to the sensible way. Thanks for your support x

  • Now you have said it, it's not so bad. No one here ever judges - well we might judge people 2lb overweight!! We would tell them to bog off! You will do well here, we are all lovely!

  • But it can be equally hard when you just have a few pounds to lose. It is just as hard to stick to sensible food and not to creep to the biscuit tin. People saying 'you don't need to lose weight' is all well and good but they aren't inside your head when all you can see is the spare tyre and fat bum! I know that the scale of the problem is different but the less you have to lose the slower it is! So you don't lose the 4lbs a week and get the team hurrah! You lose half a pound and feel that you're not really trying. This forum is a wonderful source of information, motivation and support - for everyone.

  • Have you thought about intermittent fasting there's loads of different ways you can incorporate it & it's been useful in resetting metabolism & reversing insulin resistance 😃

  • Hi. I dont post here often but just thought I would offer one other bit of advice. Please have a look at diabetes.co.uk. not the other major site which is .org. I am suggesting that one because there is a low carb plan you can join for free. The forum is fantastic and so very helpful.

    The forum gives free recipes, help and guidance. I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic on june 26. I weighed 101 kgs. Now weigh 79 kgs and its because of what I learnt on that site..

    As a prediabetic you will have different nutritional needs and you have such an opportunity to overcome this nasty disease. I have gone low carb and can honestly say that now it is not difficult. But the first week was very tough. There are loads in that forum who will absolutely understand both your problems and the difficulties you face.

    One other thing, please ignore the eatwell guide. Its useless for people facing diabetes.

  • I would offer some advice based on my own experiences. Please don't focus on the summit of the mountain and see how far away it is, you need to watch where you are placing your feet right in front of you. Small gains are major battles won, lose a few lbs celebrate it (not with a cake) I spent a long time thinking that I had a mountain to climb but only in the last two years have I discarded that idea (I'm now 54) and just decided to eat as well as I can and accept I will have set backs. At my heaviest I was a robust 19st 11lbs (I am a big chap ex rugby player) now I am about 14st 5lbs still not skinny by a mile but it is slowly reducing. Ideally I would like to be 13st 7lbs but I'm not going to beat myself up about it. So please try to take it a week at a time. Expect set backs and times you will eat the wrong stuff. Accept that it is your responsibility but if it goes wrong its just a bad day or two. Stay as positive as you can and accept the change will be a very positive thing and the journey not easy.

  • You have done really well that is fabulous. I think I have gone through a similar situation where I get disheartened if it don't lose massive amounts and give up. I have also decided to just concentrate on eating properly and exercising and see how it goes. Also it is a journey and not a race. I'm trying to hammer this into me. Thank you.

  • Thats so true you know. Whatever diet you follow, changing your mindset is what will ultimately make the difference. Its not a diet, its a permanent lifestyle change. The weight will just follow.   • This is the longest time I have been under 15st since I was 16 years old, wow I was that big on and off for over 35 years. Feel better for it any day of the week. But as other posts have said its a lifestyle choice and sometimes not an easy one..

    You seem very positive now and that I think is the first step, I think you will surprise yourself..

  • I am trying to take it one day at a time and not look to future events. In the past if I have had an occasion coming up I have said oh well it's not worth starting until after. This is what I want to stop doing I need to just go day by day and if there are meals out/occasions not to let them spoil things and knock me off!! I feel positive thanks for your help.

    I have been (and still am) obese this has led to diabetes. My GPs have been helpful. See if yours will refer you to a "DESMOND" corse I found it useful the go through what diabetes is both type1 and2 and what diets are useful.

    I also found the Michael Mosley books useful and use the 5-2 diet, I've found concentrating on eating right is better for me than trying to loose weight.

    I've also joined a trial called better me which came through this site (the diabetes forum I think) which is supporting people dealing with diabetes and pre diabetes. I don't know if they are still taking people on but you could try googling them

    Good luck, oh by the way when I cleaned up my diet I lost four stone I still have a long way to go but my blood sugars are back in the normal range!,
