Hi my name is Gar'ee and I'm in my late 40's and weigh approx 23 stone. I feel so unhealthy and would love to loss weight but I also suffer from depression since Christmas 2012. This is when I put on 9 stone. Does anyone have any advice, I have tried everything

Hi and welcome

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI (can be found in the pinned Newbie post) to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for 😊

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate 😊

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support - which is great to get ideas of what other people are eating and I have to confess to nicking some of their menu's and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too 😊

Hello Gar'ee and welcome.

Sorry to hear about the depression, I know how debilitating that can be. The good thing, is that you'd be hard pressed to find a more upbeat bunch of people, who will always be here to support you.

Take your time to read and understand everything that Cracker10 has posted and then take your time to read and understand the various areas of interest mentioned (such as the NHS 12 week plan).

The more information you arm yourself with now the the better your chance of succeeding.

You are able to achieve your goal and the more you get involved here then the better chance you have to succeed. Feel free to post your thoughts, feelings, ideas at anytime.

Hello and welcome Hidden

I'm sorry you are struggling with depression and that it has led to weight gain. Are you getting any help? if you could maybe get help with the depression the perhaps weight loss would be easier?

In the meantime have a good look around the forum especially at the suggestions Cracker has made and please ask if you have any questions.

Welcome Hidden it is very difficult to achieve a sense of balance when you are depressed and thinking in terms of overall weight loss can be very overwhelming. If you can make it your goal to achieve 1lb loss that would be great then re set your goal to lose another 1lb. 1lb at a time 😀

Hi Gar

I have suffered with depression and it is hard to lose weight when you are feeling low.

I would combat the depression and go and see your GP and also mention your weight as he will be able to give you advice on any programmes available in your area. If there aren't aren't any programmes I would firstly try swapping your foods around I.e. SSoupsugary foods for carrots and you can have healthy dips like salsa; yoghurt; guacamole etc and you can make these yourself

Welcome Gar'ee to this wonderful forum and I'm sorry to hear that you are suffering from depression. I'm hoping you've spoken to your GP about this and are receiving all available support. With regards weight loss I focus on One day at a time, I don't look at how much weight in total have to lose I break it down to one day at a time. Let me exercise today, let me eat healthy today... that has helped me. Like you I have a lot of weight to lose but as it took a while to get to this weight it will also take a while to disappear which is where my ODAAT comes in. You'll do it sweetie, believe me u will, good luck for the future x

Hi, I know how you feel. I was you last September! I made up my mind to do it, cut out processed carbs and now I have lost over 6 stone! You can do it too and we will all help!

Dear Sad I was 19st 4lb just had cancer op and whilst I was walking the dog a driver shouted out of the window - fat bitch - I thought I had better do something - I joined slimming world that was in 2014, I have lost 5st slowly, seems a long time but my skin is not too bad with losing slowly. I was never hungry on this eating plan. It is just that you have to cut out fats. I am just suggesting as I am not very active with different medical conditions. I still get bouts of depression so it is not a cure but I can walk which I couldn't before. I think the best thing I found is that I felt smarter in clothes. I had the philosophy every mouthful every day. Feeling smarter in clothes does help mood. I am 68 now.

Hi Hidden . I too know what it is like to suffer from depression and the subsequent weight gain. I hope that you are receiving treatment and support with this.

With regard to the weight loss, as previously said, take it a day at a time and try not to beat yourself up about it. Hope to see you regularly in here as it is so helpful and the best of luck to you. x
