I'm new here and I've made a decision

Hello - I'm Ellen and I like making decisions. The word decide means to cut away from - and in this case, I'm cutting away from the path that my weight and fitness were heading on which was a downhill one. I'm drawing a line in the sand and committing to losing the 6 stone that has gradually crept on over the last 30 years. I've just found this site and thought this could be a very useful tool to record the journey. So that's it for now. I will share everything as I go along and hopefully make some friends and fellow travellers along the way.

Hi EllenWatts

Welcome to the weight loss forum.

Take a look at the Welcome Newbie post in the Pinned post section at the right hand side or at the bottom if your on a mobile. Have a look at the nhs 12 week plan, many members have had success following this plan. Use the BMI checker to work out your daily calorie allowance. Take your measurements at the start together with a photo so you can see the changes on the days the scales don't move.

Below the Pinned posts are the Topics where members share a range of weight related subjects.

Have a look at the Daily Diary which you can find on the Home page in Events. It is where all the members are sharing their daily plans on what they are eating and any exercise they are doing. This thread will give you some ideas on how to start.

We have daily weigh in's so why not come along and join us today. You can find the weigh ins on the Home page in the Events section on the right. Just click on the post in Events and record your start weight and any loss/gain or maintain for the week.

You may notice that members have a grey box next to their name, these are achievement badges. All new members have a "newbie" badge to begin with.

Please note if you are using the new HU app it does not have all the forums features on it, so we suggest you use the full website version.

To get the most of the forum be active, share tips, recipes and experiences. Read some of the posts they are very motivating.

Have a good first week.

Hello EllenWatts from a fellow traveller! Loved that introduction. You come over as being very positive and someone who having made a decision, will stick to it!

I started my journey at the end of February 2012, and managed to lose 4.5 stone in 2 and a half years through calorie counting and logging/weighing all of my food.

Then re-gained some, lost some again and have now managed to more or less maintain for the past 6 months.

BUT... ideally I would love to drop another stone and maintain there.

I may do a bit of a push in the forthcoming months as we have a few trips away planned, so I'd rather start as light as possible to allow for a little "additional baggage" that I may collect along the way!

Oh well done you - 4.5 stone is fantastic and especially as you've maintained it too. Did you do it by following the 12 week plan on here? I've just downloaded that and plan to have a read though next.

Enjoy your trips away - we've got a holiday next month too - and I'd love a stone off before I go.

No, I didn't do it here, but joined a weight loss website with the facility to use their various resources, including a database of foods, food diary, etc. weightlossresources.co.uk It worked for me - still use the site and log my food most days. Was a real education in showing me initially just how much I was over eating (I have a physical disability that affects my ability to walk and am a little shortie at 4ft 9"!)

I think the key to success for me has been educating myself about the calorific and nutritional values of different food.

I love cooking, and have used that to my advantage - I love to search out healthy recipes on-line or adapt recipes to make them healthier.

Luckily I love vegetables so eat a lot of those. Dinner tonight was simple. Fresh green beans cooked with some new potatoes.... served warm. Poured over a tin of mackerel which was in a creamy mustard sauce - took 15 minutes and super tasty!

Thank you that's really helpful :-) I'll check that out. But for now, talking of dinner.......

I am on the 12 week weight loss programme and found it very useful- I wanted to loose about 2 stone which I have done in 6 months. I use a free app from the windows 10 store to log my calories and others use myfitnesspal (I think that's what its called- 'm sure if I am wrong someone who uses the app will correct me!) The programme set mini weekly challenges but also advice when eating out, alcohol and snacks. Some people on the forum go to weight watchers/slimming world or on specific diets- 5:2 or its variations and low protein or carbs or BHF. There is no right or wrong way its what you prefer, the important thing is choosing a method which you can accept and stick to for the long term. Just remember not to eat too little since you will end up putting weight on if you restrict your intake too much (your body thinks its starving so stores every thing as fat)

Good luck and welcome
