What is safe to eat

I am so confused. What is safe to eat? I just watched a documentary on Netflix that basically says all our food is riddled with hormones, dioxines, pesticides, bacteria, pus, the list is endless. So I ask what is safe to eat because apparently chicken and fish is bad not to mention meat and eggs. Carbohydrates are good eaten in moderation but even if you purchase the organic variety, you can't be sure chemicals emitted from the chimneys of the nearby factories have not deposited harmful chemicals on all plants and livestock. I would be grateful if you could tell me what is safe to eat to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle, so I don't end up with diabetes, cancer, dementia, arthritis, you get the drift.

Hi and welcome, Feio :)

I'm afraid we're all in the same boat as you, we have to read all the information that's available, then make as informed choices as we can. We aren't experts, just overweight people trying to lose some of that weight, by following a healthier lifestyle.

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the NHS BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

I'm perhaps being a little idealistic but thankfully British farming standards are very high, so as long as you practice a little common sense, i.e. Washing fruit and veg before use, then there shouldn't be a problem. The internet is full of claims about products that promise to "de-tox" our bodies but that's what your kidneys are for!!

Sensible portions, varied diet and as little processed food as possible and you won't go far wrong. 😊

If only it were that simple.

Quality food from a good source and cooking from ingredients rather than packets is the best policy.

Only you can decide what you will eat or won't eat. I don't have any sugar and I avoid wheat and processed foods.

Join in the conversations on here so that you can find out what is going on and pick up hints and tips from loads of people.

Enjoy your journey to a new lifestyle.
