New start with a new goal

Hi all, a newbie here. This afternoon I received a call from my doctor informing me my cholesterol levels are too high. So its time to stop messing about and get the excess 8 stone of weight off me. I have just read week one of the 12 week plan and I will be so happy if I lose 1lb a week. I am not looking for any quick fix, I am in for the long haul and looking forward to getting rid of that extra person I am carrying about with me!!

  • Hi and welcome, DD :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run a weigh-in every day of the week and you'd be very welcome to join one of them. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the HOME page, bottom on a mobile.

We also run a Daily Diary, where we share our meal and exercise plans for the day. It's a great place to get ideas and to keep us focused. The link can also be found in Events.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

  • Welcome to the forum, DD7005. You've come to the right place. This forum is supportive, non judgemental and fun. I don't think you will regret it.🤗

  • Welcome DD7005

I'm sure if we could see inside our bodies then we wouldn't end up overweight and think twice about what we put in them. Thank goodness for your doctor's call led you to this wonderful place.

I'd aim for a stone at a time and I'm sure by Christmas you'll absolutely love the new you. Top tip from me - check in every day, support others and join in the weight ins and challenges. Enjoy the journey X

  • Welcome DD7005 and well done for recognising this is not a quick fix but a leisurely and beautifully crafted lifestyle change.

Don't know what you eat at present but getting rid of all sugar, processed foods and refined carbohydrates from your diet would be great. Depends if you can do it slowly or if you are full on do it all at once person. Everybody has to find their own way.

Make food your friend and not your enemy, eat well and you will never look back.

    Take care

  • A pound a week is a great goal, you will enjoy the forum as long as you join in and read the many posts.. current and past... there's lots of information to enjoy. Wishing you success for everything you work for.

My little tip would be to take measurements.. When the scales isn't friendly.. the tape might surprize you!! If you don't have a tape.. choose a piece of clothing that you know is tighter than you'd like and try it on and enjoy it becoming looser as time goes on.

Enjoy your new lifestyle.. Cheering you on 🎉🎉🎉

  • Hi a while ago my cholesterol level was 7.4% and the nurse said cut down a bit on bread and change to wholemeal bread instead of white and cut down on hard cheese. It has now gone down to 6.2%

Small changes but very easily done.
