Newby trying to loose weight!

I'm a newbie and have been struggling with weight loss for the last 5 years. I weigh enough to be classed as clinically obese according to BMI! :-(

I desperately want to loose weight - I cycle the mile and bit to work everyday and go for a walk at lunch as well as play netball twice a week. I do have a love-hate relationship with food which I am trying to break out of though this is really difficult. I am a somewhat fussy eater and cannot stand salad in any form and am allergic to fish and mushrooms. I eat lots of vegetables, pasta, rice and poultry. I also have a very sweet tooth and crave sugary snacks like chocolate and biscuits constantly. It gets so bad that I end up chewing my nails to try and control it. I'm in need of some advice! TIA

  • Hey there! I'm new to this too. Day 1 for me. I'm overwhelmed by how hard loosing weight is too. I am starting by making a plan for today...and I guess I'll go from there. It's nice to read about others in the same boat. Maybe when we are craving treats today we can look at this forum instead?

  • Hi and welcome, MusicalNim :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run a weigh-in every day of the week and you'd be very welcome to join one of them. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the HOME page, bottom on a mobile.

We also run a Daily Diary, where we share our meal and exercise plans for the day. It's a great place to get ideas and to keep us focused. The link can also be found in Events.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

  • I too was at a stage where I knew I needed to do something but wasn't sure what. I found the NHS 12-week plan and figured 12 weeks wasn't forever so I'd give it a try. I found it really worked and was a sensible guide to a healthy lifestyle rather than a diet. I really like that as I refuse to diet! Healthy eating has been fabulous, but I found I really need to keep track of what I'm eating as well. Otherwise my eyes seem to trick the rest of me into thinking I should eat more than I need! :)

Take it slow and sensibly and I'm sure you'll start to get where you're going.

    Good Luck! :)

  • Welcome to the forum. I am losing weight for my wedding despite the fact that my fiancé and I haven't set a date yet. I am following Slimming World but weighing in at my mum's instead of going to meetings because I am saving for my wedding and I am in the process of moving. I have lost 5 1/2 lbs in 4 weeks. I really like this forum and appreciate the support I get from other members as well as friends and family.
