SURGERIES and STUPIDITY

Jackie here. I weighed 10.12 in December 2013, since when I have had hip and two total knee replacements which has led to a weight gain of 3 stone!!! The surgeries themselves did not do the damage, it was the comfort eating, boredom and depression. I need to lose 2 stone (not the whole 3) and am finding it really difficult to actually start. I know the first step is the hardest, but THIS hard? I am retired and spend a great deal of time reading. Vigorous exercise is not an option due to the legs being not what they should be any more. O happy dancing days.

Morning Jaybelle and welcome to this very friendly forum. Admin will be along soon, if they haven't already. Loosing weight is more about eating healthily rather than vigorous exercise. So I suggest once you have read all the info Admin give you, that you write yourself out a food plan for the week, set your self some tiny goals and make a list of small non food rewards for each goal achieved. There will be others on the forum that have been through similar to you and I'm sure they will have great advice. Good luck😊

Hello Jaybelle and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum 😊 I have been where you are, in that viscous cycle of chronic pain, mobility issues and over eating, but trust me, if I can turn it around, anyone can 😊

Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.

The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you ☺

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news ☺

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for ☺

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate ☺

The forum also have group weigh-ins every day if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page ☺

You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you may have a 'Newbie' badge. If you have any questions or would like a Newbie badge please just ask ☺

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too ☺

Best wishes

Anna

Thankyou. I have my calorie counter book and a notebook and a calculator! I will check my BMI and be good to go tomorrow (no good today as I did not weigh in before dressing and eating 2 Weetabix). Salads are improving in quality. That is good as a tasty salad is something I actually enjoy. My own cooking? Not so much unless it is a good pasta sauce with tagliatelle!

The beauty of calori counting is that no food is forbidden 😊 I would also start right now. Two weetabix is a good start 😊

Good luck

Hi Jackie, just to add to the already good advice, have you thought about exercise in water? Maybe your local pool does a gentle aqua fit session? If your hips&knees are limiting your activity could you try seeing your gp for an exercise on prescription referral? Or the local Physio department? You may benefit from some strengthening exercises? Lots of areas also have "walk for health" sessions aimed at all levels of ability. A couple of cheap walking poles from go outdoors will off load your joints too & increase your cardio. Plus they look dead sporty! I'm a Physio myself so I am Biased but don't write off the activity side of things! Good luck!
