Time to get Real

Hi All

I am new to this. I am not doing the NHS weight loss programme but I have started a weight loss regime today

I bought myself a second hand Davina McCall exercise bike and I intend to do the 13 minute HIIT workout by Adrian Bryant twice a day

I am 4ft 10 and weight 11stones which is utterly disgusting. My weight started to creep up 3 years ago after giving birth to my one and only child.

I want to do this for him and be healthy too. I hope that I will receive some support with this

Hi and welcome, Rubz :)

We're really pleased that you've chosen to join us today and would be interested to know how you found out about Health Unlocked and this forum.

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run daily weigh-in's and you'd be very welcome to join us. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the HOME page, bottom on a mobile.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Welcome Rubz89 . You've made a good start by coming here! I hope your weight loss regime will include some form of calorie control, not just an exercise regime, as I think you will find if you ask people on here, they will agree that healthy eating, calorie reduction and portion control are more important for weight loss than just exercise. So good luck, keep reading and posting and let us know how you get on.

Hi Trimmerteacher.

Yes defo doing calorie control too. I need to limit myself to 1400 or less calories a day. My biggest problem is that I eat once a day and this has had a massive blow on my metabolism rate.

in reply to Rubz89

Well that doesn't sound a great way to lose weight to me (sorry, that sounds as though I know it all! I don't, but I have a lot of experience haha!) Why do you feel you have to eat only once a day? Is there any way you could start to change your habits and break up your meals into smaller ones, maybe twice a day to start with? And 1400 is a very low target for daily consumption. If you check out your BMI and see what the range is which it allows you to eat and still lose weight, you might find you can eat more than that. Eating is one of life's pleasures! I know that's why some of us have ended up here haha! but it's still true, and we have to ackowledge that and make sure we enjoy our mealtimes and the food we eat, otherwise it can bnever bee sustainable.

I have had a problem of eating once a day for a long time now and trying very hard to break this cycle.

the NHS BMI check recommended that my calorie intake should be 1400 a day in order to lose weight

1400 calories is the generic amount of calories recommended, but as you are so petite, it's probably just about right for you. Don't be tempted to go lower though, as that would be counter-productive :)

I have to agree with Trimmerteacher and say that if you really do want to get real, then it's time to change the habits of a lifetime and start doing something different.

My best advice would be to at least split your meal into two, to start with :)

Well good luck, hope you can break the cycle as you say. I feel sure that will be the key to your successful weight loss.

And as I've seen many others on here say - if you keep doing the same old same old, you will get the same old result! x

I must advise you to make sure you do not to eat less calories than the bmi calculator states as when I first joined here I was eating less than this states thinking it will help me lose weight quicker and I was advised by someone who has now left that this is the wrong thing to do because your body believes that you are trying to starve it so then turns what you do eat into body fat to ensure it can continue. Body fat weighs more than the correct amount of calories would so this was why I was not losing weight and sometimes putting weight on. At this time I was only eating two meals a day and was unable to have enough calories I was supposed to be having in a day. I wasn't losing any weight so I upped the amount of meals a day to three and four and was having the correct amount of calories as advised and have since started losing weight. I have now lost almost 2st. I don't know if this could be the reason you are not losing weight but if you are not actually eating enough then this could be the reason. Good luck!

HubbysMissMouse Thank you for the advice

Great advice HubbysMissMouse, and well done for losing 2 stone, that's a great achievement.

I have only just joined, but like you ate quite a lot on the first day, but not my allowance, then was starving the next day.

As a consequence of that I am trying to get as close to my allowance each day as possible. I have a healthy evening snack to help with that.

It is great to have this forum to discuss the ups and downs on the way.

Hi Rubz89 you sound very similar to me! I am 5ft2 and weigh 10st 9lb. I started at beginning of March with calorie control, portion size and fitness, when i started i was 11st7 so have lost nearly a stone now which makes me feel great! I try and stick to around 1400calories a day too but doesn't always work especially with the bbq season coming round! my main thing was wine at the weekends, i didn't realise how many calories were in each bottle, i have now switched to reduced alcohol and sugar wine which seems to suit me better. I have also taken up boxing, being short and stocky this sport really works for me and its really good fun. Lots of luck with it all hope you feel good about it all. dont worry if you have a bad day i find being hard on yourself makes it worse, and if you want something naughty just have a small thing, kitkat (2 bars) are my new best friend! :)

Hi Kirtsy8

Wow that is amazing. congrats on your weight loss and healthy lifestyle so far. I wish you all the best for the journey onwards

Yes today will be my official start date and I think sometimes I scare myself more than I need to with trying to change meals and lifestyle too quickly. I will be making changes slowly.

I'm 4ft11 and I've set myself a 1500 calorie limit because I find it an easier number to split into 3 meals. If you only eat once a day maybe try something like a snack bar or something at the other meal times so its a start at introducing other meals. Just do small things like walk an extra bit.

Hi Lyss

Yes I walk every morning 2 miles to work and then when I get home after work in the evening I do the HIIT training

Yes a snack bar sounds like a good idea. Thank you

I used a davina exercise bike to help lose weight. It really helped me to have it so I can watch TV so I didn't get bored! Increased my exercise gradually, then increased the resistance levels.

Good luck!
