Hi egg_shell1977 ,

I haven't got any personal experience with weight loss surgery, but there is some information on NHS Choices about it, and a link is here if you'd like to take a look - including a podcast by a lady called Vicky who had a gastric band, and talks about her personal experience, so maybe have a look at that as a starting point:

nhs.uk/conditions/weight-lo...

The NHS 12 week plan for weight loss is very good - and I'd recommend having a look at that as well, as a non-surgical option, and there is lots of support on this forum for losing weight, so I hope you'll keep posting and get some support. Being stressed definitely can lead to comfort eating, and maybe there might be other ways you could relieve the stress with some help and support.

Good luck,

Zest :-)

Hello Egg_Shell1977 and welcome to the forum.

Four of my work colleagues have undergone gastric bypass surgery in recent years, one of whom is coming up to four years post op, and I’m friendly with another three who are in the early stages of such elective surgery.

Although it’s worked for them, in the sense that weight has continued to reduce following surgery, they all now live incredibly restrictive lives, since they have to ensure that consumption of fat, fibre and sugar remains measured – failure to do so leaves them exposed to ‘dumping’ syndrome.

They also need to self-administer a host of multi-vitamins on a daily basis, to prevent loss of hair and to ensure health of skin and nails, for example, since the body is no longer able to absorb nutrients in the way it once did.

Furthermore, due to the rate at which weight has been lost, they all suffer from an excess of loose skin, particularly upon the abdomen. Only further surgery can go some way towards rectifying its appearance.

As such, having possibly tried all other methods in an attempt to lose weight, you’re fortunate enough to have eventually found us.

Whilst you may seek an instant fix towards the management of weight, by beginning to adopt the NHS 12 Week Plan (making use of its BMI calculator), in addition to regularly engaging with the thousands of world-wide members of the forum, you’ll hopefully realise that elective surgery isn’t the only option.

Granted, through following the NHS plan, you may only lose 2lbs per week. However, those small reductions will soon amount towards something rather impressive as the weeks pass.

Moreover, you certainly won’t be alone in discovering that popular ‘paid-for’ weight loss schemes have failed you, since many a member has stumbled upon the forum when all appeared to be lost, only to excel upon beginning to follow the 12 Week Programme.

In essence, the forum teaches and educates in ways that modern ‘paid for’ weight management programmes don’t, or indeed won’t, since they rely upon continued membership subscription to exist.

If you’ve ever stayed for a WW or SW talk, I’d very much doubt you’ve ever heard BMR or TDEE mentioned.

By continuing to stick around upon the HU weight loss forum, you’ll learn about BMR/TDEE and how their importance plays a role in ensuring life-long management of weight; they’re also far simpler to ascertain and manage than free points and green days (hence why so many excel by beginning to follow the 12 Week Plan).

Although you may consider that hope has abandoned you, by stumbling upon us, you can rest assured that it hasn’t.

Your journey towards successful weight loss (and its maintenance thereafter) begins here and now, egg_shell.
