New Start: Here we go!

New Start: Here we go!

I am a 49 y.o. man who was once fit and healthy. After a decade of no exercise and poor diet, I find myself at 103kg (16st 3lbs). Since I am 5' 9" tall this makes me officially obese.

I plan to lose 2 or 3 stones in weight and keep it there. I am going to cut out sugar and fat from my diet, and eat lots more fresh fruit and veg (organic if poss).

I also plan to be more active and use my bicycle where possible, and go swimming and to the gym 2/3 times per week. Ideally, I would like to go running in the nearby park, but that may be some time off.

I wanted to post this info here as a reminder of my goals and to help me track my progress.

Hi to everyone on the site and good luck.

Hi and welcome, 50up :)

I LOVE the pic! You're going to fit in here perfectly!! :)

You have some excellent goals, but whilst I wholeheartedly concur with cutting out sugar, I would advise against cutting all fat, as it's an essential part of our diet. It also helps to keep us satiated, which is very handy when we're cutting back on quantity :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run daily weigh-in's and you'd be very welcome to join us. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Hi Mate

I have just done the 12 week challenge and lost 3 stone. And I'm 62. I started cycling 5 miles a day and do 20. you need to diet and exercise to get the best results.

So lets get started. Print off the NHS Food and Activirty charts and do the BMI calculator.

Next give the biscuit ,crisp, sugary drinks the elbow.

Start counting your cals every day.

small changes in diet will add up and find time to exercise.

Good Luck

Kind Regards Phil62

Hi Phil62,

Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I have already cut out the sugary drinks and crisps etc, and am planning the exercise. I know that exercise is key. Thinking that I may cycle to the swimming pool this afternoon...your post may have been the final push I needed.

Losing 3 stone would be ideal for me, well done. So you recommend the 12 week challenge?

Finding (or making) the time to exercise will be key, I think.

Much appreciated. Keep up the good work.

I cycled the 2 miles to the pool, had a session swimming (about 1/2 hr), and cycled back 2 miles slightly uphill. Glad I did it. Hopefully, I can build on it and keep it going as part of my routine. Cheers @Phil62 for the inspiration 8-)

Well done! You are on the right path.

Well done... I cycled to swimming and back in the rain yesterday...

I really need to get the bike out more too... In 2011 bicycle, swimming alittle walking and diet lost me 35lbs...

It all went back on but back on the weight loss journey again and I've lost 29 lbs over a much longer period... It goes back on so much easier than coming off 😶

I've not been on the bike much if late so i think reintroducing it might help me kick start me losing a few more lbs.
