Hi DiveMonkey & Members of Tortoise & Hare Club,

Just updating on my run this week - and sharing the data from my Fitbit. I went to the gym on Tuesday morning, and I did 'interval running' - i.e. 1km running on treadmill (5 times) with different activities inbetween each 1km run - the other activities included lifting some weights, cycling, and using the rowing machine, and cross-trainer - however the Fitbit didn't differentiate these activities and presumed it was one complete run! So, I'm sharing the stats anyway, and was pleased that my average bpm was 133, and that apparently I burned the equivalent of 642 calories in my gym session of just over 1 hour duration.

Heart rate zones: 31 mins of peak heart rate, 13 mins of cardio and 10 mins of fat burn - sounds good!

I would have liked to run again this week - but I admit I was aching a lot after that session and I've concluded it was because I didn't do any stretching, so next time I am going to stretch both before and after working out. I'm hoping that will make a difference.

I might run again on the weekend, if the weather is conducive to it - and hope to maybe get out on the cliff-paths for a run, all being well.

Happy running everyone, and here's to a great weekend.

Zest :-)

Hi. One of the problems with the fitbit and most of the activity trackers are they will not pick up anything to do with weights, and it will only see your heart rate going up so its presuming you are running? I do Three classes on a Wednesday, one of those is a fat burn class that is all interval, super intense exercises for short durations. This lasts for half an hour and a lady with a fitbit only registered the heart rate increase but because not all the exercises were up and down like standing sprints it did not pick them all up. I think she said her fitbit said we had burned about 250 cals. Another lady had a much more advance activity tracker on her wrist and that registered most of the exercises because she told the app she was doing a class and you could see every 20 seconds there was 50 seconds of activity that led to a 450 calorie class? Oh and a max BPM of 180!!! That must have been when we were doing the squat frog jumps!! My spin class did not register on a fitbit as it is cycling but my lady with the advanced activity tracker told me we had burned 650 calories!! and my Tone class that is all weights only picked up the warm up and barely any of the weighted movements,

Have a go next time you are in the gym on the rower to do a steady tempo for one minute and then go flat out for 30 seconds, then back to steady tempo for a minute then another flat out burst for 30 seconds. Try and do 4 or 5 fast bursts. Let me know what your BPM gets up to doing this. This is HIIT and it really gets the old ticker going.

Keep on Running!!!

Keith

Hi Keith,

Thanks for your reply, and I appreciate all that you said. I am finding the use of the Fitbit fascinating, and it is very motivating for me. Since I've had one, it's really encouraged me to do more, and I'm enjoying that.

Your suggestions for the rowing machine are much appreciated too - it's great that HIIT can be done on so many different activities.

Yes, I hope to keep on running.

Hope you're having a great week yourself.

Thank you again for your enthusiasm. :-)

Brilliant Zest, you work so hard! I think stretches after such a gruelling workout, sounds like a very good idea. I hope you're not aching as much now and will be able to get out for another run, next week :)

Hi moreless - thanks so much, and I'm feeling much better now thank you - but the weather isn't conducive to running outside at the moment - drizzle and fog... Maybe tomorrow - good to have a day of rest today as I've had a full-on week. :-)

Hope you're having a lovely weekend!

I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better, but sad about your weather! Ours has been a bit hit and miss too! I think we're getting early April showers! :D

I hope you're enjoying your weekend too, despite the fog and drizzle :)

I really am, thank you, Zest, catching up on some paperwork after a really hectic week. Going for a long run tomorrow morning and a walk with a friend in the afternoon tomorrow, which will be lovely. Might get some geocaching in as well!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend too :)
