Hello everyone, I have only just joined but I got involved in various NHS programmes since September when I started their Smokefree programme and after 35 years smoking 20 a day with their support I was able to give up. However I have put on soooooo much weight but I feel if I can give up smoking with their help I can get fit and healthy and hopefully lose weight at the same time. I am doing swimming 3 x a week and have just started the couch to 5km programme but I have Fibromyalgia and was wondering if there are any exercises I could do on my bad day's when I can hardly move off the couch. I am thinking maybe yoga or pilates might help with my flare ups ,anybody else in a similar position? Thank you for reading x πŸ€πŸ€πŸ€ Lady Leprechaun πŸ€πŸ€πŸ€

Hi and welcome, Ladyleprechaun :)

I don't suffer with Fibromyalgia, but there are many members that do, so I'm sure some of them will be able to answer your questions :)

There's also a fibromyalgia community

healthunlocked.com/fibromya...

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

We run daily weigh-in's and you'd be very welcome to join us. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh... I thought you may find this useful. I featured on the BBC news website a while ago about disability and exercise.

I try to do an hour of stretches sat on a gym ball and Pilates (mat based) - not to earn calories, but to keep my aches and pains at bay and to keep myself as mobile as possible.

Pilates may be good, but I found having a one-to-one session with an instructor was better as many of the exercises needed to be tailored to my abilities. I try and do them regularly, as although you don't move much, the exercises get to those muscles that make a huge difference to balance - and that has helped me a lot!

Thanks I will take a look,I'm thinking about pilates or yoga for the stretching element also so I might take a beginner's class in both to see which is better for me. I shall let you know! 😊

I can send you some short videos of me doing my exercises if you are interested? It's one-to-one Pilates and some general stretches.
