Hi

I am new today. Need to lose a fair bit of weight. Have done weight watchers for a month and put on a kilo. Their support just kept saying I wasn't eating enough and eat more carbs!

So an unhappy me ended up here. And I hope that this time with counting calories I can do it. I don't want to be unrealistic and say I want to be a stick thin girl, just get back in my clothes is my first goal.

But in reality I need to lose around 6 stone. But if I say that out loud I panic so just getting back in my existing clothes comfortably is my first goal.

    Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

    Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

    Take a look at the 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

    We run daily weigh-in's and you'd be very welcome to join us. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.

    We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

  • I would like to welcome you to here @Kittyswallow and can tell you that when I first joined here I hardly ate anything as I never ate breakfast, would only have a sandwich for lunch and then eat my dinner and when I added up my calories on here I was eating an average of around 1000 calories because I always thought the less you ate the better because it would stop you putting on more weight. It sounds like you may be doing the same thing although I know I could be wrong. When I worked out my calorie count on the bmi calculator I should have been eating around 1400-1800 but still struggled to eat much more than 1000. I was always the one that would be fatter than the rest of my family and I was always the one that ate the least. We all thought this was strange. On here I was originally not losing any weight for the first few weeks and someone said to me make sure u r eating enough calories otherwise you won't lose any weight. If you don't eat enough your body will think you are trying to starve it so turns what you do eat into body fat to ensure that it can continue carrying on. Fat ends up weighing more than general calories do and obviously makes your body bigger so you put on weight. I decided to eat more for a while to give this a try in case it was right and now am eating more than before and finally losing weight. I have lost 1st 8lbs so far while eating more, I can't believe it. Hope you have a good time here and get on well with it.   • I have the same problem!! You can't believe that eating too little results in weighing more. I have a real problem with losing weight and that's because when I am struggling I tend to default to my previous eating habits - that's too little rather than too much..... Never mind we'll all get there with perseverance :)

  • I have been on this journey since the beginning of November but I just keep myself doing similar things that I know I will continue with after I have lost the weight, I want to do it this way because I see this as a life change for me and not a diet. I don't do very much exercise because I know me and know that when I finish this I will end up stopping the exercising which will probably make me add the weight back on. Also me and my husband like to go out occasionally too so while I am doing this I make sure that I go out for meals some times and also have take always as well so just fit all this in whilst doing this as well. I also use the sort of foods at home that I know I will continue with afterwards and have mainly dropped the portion sizes to the correct sizes and have breakfasts daily but also add in more veg and fruit that I know I like and will stick with from now on. I am so pleased I have managed all this and still lost the weight. Some people do drop the carb intake like pasta, rice and potatoes which also helps them lose weight but I know I love my carbs too much and will never be able to continue without this all my life either.

  • Totally agree with HubbysMissMouse, it goes against all your lifes experience to go above and beyond the 1,000cal barrier but do give it a go. Iv lost 2st 2lbs since September, with a few hiccups along the way on approximately 1,250cals which is still low but its sustainable. Reading all the lovely people on here stories and experiences lets you know you are not alone in your struggle. We do understand and are very human. Well done starting on your new path to a better life for you. Little steps, little successes will lead to big achievement. Good luck, and sending you very warm support.

  • Hi Kittyswallow eating more of the right things though - almonds, fish try food that has good nutrient in it. If you are eating a recommended calorie level and moving enough and still not losing you could try going to the doctor. It might be you would need a thyroid test. Have you tried keeping a food diary? 🤞

  • Best decision you could make Kittyswallow is to join us on the forum. You will get loads of advice, guidance, hints and tips but most of all people who understand what you are dealing with. No one will judge you.

    Make your weight loss journey an adventure with food, try new things-if we do what we have always done we will get what we have always got-it is a very true saying. This is a lifestyle change place rather than a diet oriented one.

    Be happy, join some of the challenges and come on the forum regularly to join in the conversations.

  • Thanks everyone. I do know my BMI etc and am keeping a food diary. I will be going to my GP and will get my thyroid checked again as it has always been on the low side of normal. I have an active job and try to get to the gym twice a week.

  • I've always felt that the first pounds you lose with slimming groups are the ones in your wallet, but that's just my opinion. I know that some people are very happy with them and have lost a lot of weight by using their diets. Maybe I'm just not into that kind of controlled dieting.

    You have the right idea with setting small targets. If I thought about the total amount I need to lose, I'd struggle to do anything. I'm breaking it down into 7lb chunks. That feels easier. Like you, my first goal is to get into some clothes that fit me not very long ago.

    I found that exercise helps when trying to lose weight. A long time ago I read that moderate exercise can boost your metabolism and the effect can last up to 24 hours. It can also help to stop your body going into starvation mode. Start gently if you're not used to exercising. Swimming or walking are good things to start with.

    Having said all that, you do need to be eating a reasonable amount of calories to begin with. So I suggest that you eat more, keeping to healthy choices, and do some gentle exercise.

  • Being told I could and should actually eat MORE in order to lose weight was the strangest piece of advice I'd ever been given, but after years of yo-yoing it does finally seem to make sense - I need to make my body realise I'm no longer going to starve it! Eat sensibly and well and you will find your own way, but do remember how long it took you to get to the weight you are and don't expect overnight miracles, is my advice. You'll get there, and you'll receive a ton of support from these forums on the way - good luck!

  • Hello kittyswallow I'm new too but already I feel everyone is really kind and offer fantastic advice. I struggled to believe you could eat more and loose weight and I still have to think about that so I eat the right amount of the right things. Good luck and I'm sure you will succeed :)
