hi all, i just have a little question. im 13 stone 3, height 5ft 3. bmi 32.7 i think, the nhs calorie calculator says i should be having between 1797 and 2310 calories a day, but fitnesspal says i should have 1420 a day, which would i be best following for good steady weightloss?

I think you need to calculate your basal metabolic rate (BMR) which is how much your body needs to run its basic processes even if you are sitting down doing nothing. It's not a good idea to go below it (I am not medically qualified so don't ask me why :P) but the general idea is that weight loss needs to be at a rate of 1-2 lb/week to be safe. My BMR is 1,648 calories/day according to this myfitnesspal.com/tools/bmr-... This means that if I eat that amount and do absolutely no exercise or activity of any kind, I should maintain my weight, but if I eat that amount and exercise, I should lose. The thing to watch out for is as you lose weight your BMR will also reduce and so should your daily calorie limit. Again I'm not medically qualified so if anyone thinks this is wrong please correct it. :)

Thank you for the information :) I have just checked my bmr and it is 1,620 per day making it closer to the nhs calorie guidelines of 1797 - 2310 so I will stick to the bmr rather than fitness pal. Thank you for you help

That sounds sensible. I think the advice they give is 'stay in the lower end of the range' isn't it? I've set my allowance at 1,700 but it sometimes gets closer to 1,900 a day. I'm losing weight slowly but inches are coming off faster than the weight is dropping so don't forget your trusty tape-measure - waist inches are a big thing too!

Hi Sarah

I also have a problem with the calorie in- take mine should be 1400- 1500 but according to Livestrong diet online, my intake should be 1200. As I am 4 foot 11 inches my weight should be 8 stone to 9 stone. As I am over weight I am 12 stone opps how did that happen!!!!!!!! I am now going to try the ," One You" diet from the NHS you can download the app. Good luck.

Brilliant I will try the app thank you :) I'm following the nhs 12 week plan, my "ideal" weight is supposed to be between 7 stone 5 lbs and 10 stone I was once a slim 9 stoner but that was before kids, it's been 9 years and I can still not shift it. But I'm determined now

Good luck with your goal

Hello 19sarah87 ☺ I would aim for the middle of the NHS figure. But it's not just about calories, it's food quality too. Its important to eat a wide range of foods, protein, fat, catbohydrates and fresh fruit and vegetables. I know you have IBS so be careful to choose foods that suit your digestion.

Best wishes

Anna

Thank you :) I will be keeping a food diary whilst trying new foods. I have done good so far it's only half one and I'm craving junk but did manage a slice of toast for dinner, my very first smoothie for dinner and a carrot to snack on, my problem will be portion size for tea as hubby is cooking i have already gotten out my smallest bowl so he doesn't over do it.

Thank you :)
