Most of us "plateau" at some point on our weight loss journeys. One tip is to kick start your metabolism by trying something new, cutting out carbs for example, or I personally am trying to speed up my weight loss by doing the 5:2 at the moment. The only thing you must not do is give up! even when it appears to stall completely. Quite often after weeks of little or no movement, you can get a significant loss suddenly. Let's hope that's the case for you!

The 5:2 or the fast diet (fast as in fasting, not quick!) was started by Dr Michael Mosely back in 2012. Google it and read up on it. Basically you eat normally for 5 days per week, and two days you stick strictly to 500 calories for women, 600 for men. It works well if you eat out a lot, have a busy social life etc. You can choose which days you fast each week. I plan my days and prepare the food in advance for fast days, so I am not tempted to nibble in the kitchen. So I might have a bowl,of blueberries for breakfast, homemade vegetable soup for lunch, and something from the Hairy Dieters cookbook for tea, making sure I come in at 500 or less. It's weird, but I find my fast days much easier to get through than non-fast sometimes, when I find my self in danger of over eating! But I don't count calories religiously on non fast days, although I do a rough count to try and stay under 1600.

hi. weight loss shouldn't be your only measure... also weight through-out the month is always up and down anyway..

I log my weight daily on MFP and can now see a pattern forming which shows I only lose weight at certain times of the month... other times I stay the same or even put on.

I dont look at weekly weight anymore and now look at monthly loss and it has really helped to change my mindset on weight loss.. I decided to do this on Dec and have lost a stone in 2 months and very pleased with that.

good luck x

I shared a podcast in 'resources' about metabolic adaptation and why eating enough and accepting slow weight loss is best. Have a look.

I too have "plateau'd" not helped by still having remnants of Christmas food around (few sweets, alcohol etc). They have all definitely gone now so I'm not beating myself up and am thinking "I've had my fun, now get back to work". I too am considering the 5:2 to kickstart things, but will see how going back on the calorie counting wagon helps. As others say, just don't give up and accept things..... you lost weight, you can continue to lose, you can do it, you know you can!

It's quite natural for weight loss to slow down after the first few weeks on a diet, as in the early stages you lose water as well as fat, and water weighs very heavy.

I'd suggest three things:

- First, you could have a "back to basics" week. Be very very careful about weighing and measuring your portions. As time goes on, we can get a bit careless and start guessing portions, and this can slow down weight loss. A strict week of measuring might get it shifting again

- If that doesn't do the trick, then you will need to cut your portion size or reduce your overall calorie intake, say by 100-200 cals a day

- with either of the above approaches, increase your activity levels so you are burning a bit more off

We need to burn off 3500 cals to lose a pound of fat. You can work out for yourself how long it will take you to do that based on your current calorie intake. It might be that what you are losing now is actually completely right based on what you are taking in.

Finally, wieght loss is a marathon, not a sprint, so slow weight loss is good - if it's going, even slowly, the plan is working!

Thanks for the information. Very true it is marathon. Good information on portion guess. I will take care of it. As well will match the burn off calories. thanks again.
