Nearly a stone lost since January!

Lucyjane20 profile image
23 Replies

I am new to this but i started to diet on the NHS 12 week plan at the start of january. Since then I have lost 12lbs. I dont think i look any skinnier however. I am really struggling with the exercise as I cant afford the gym with my wage and my family get annoyed when I do my fitness work out dvds at home as it makes too much noise. I go on a few walks a few with my friends. Can anyone help on what i can do?

Couch to 5k on the NHS Choices website - it's been my saviour! To run at first for 60 seconds was an absolute killer, but today just ran for 2x8 minutes...xx

Believe me Lucyjane20 nobody will laugh at you. When I started the C25K programme I had the same misgivings but once I started it became obvious that nobody cared about the red faced, sweaty lump of lard pounding away. Give it a go.

Go for it - it was the best thing i ever did- and I promise nobody takes any notice....and who cares anyway - you are out there trying to do something about it. i.e. off the couch- the C25K forum is v supportive.....

ps And the knock on benefits to your well-being is also v good...I could go on - but just consider it

and big congrats on the weight loss

Normal to feel embarrassed but really no need. I run along a main road up on the Pennines and at first thought everyone would be thinking 'look at her trying to run at her size'. But why would they be thinking that ! I don't know these people that drive past in their cars, they may well be thinking 'look at that lass, good on her for trying to do something about her size'. I'll never know what they're thinking, but moreover I don't care. I can honestly say that C25K is the best thing I've ever done. I was 6 stone 3 lbs overweight a month ago, and I've now shed 11 lbs and am feeling fitter, and looking slimmer. Still got over 5 stone to go, but this programme is getting me there faster. I ran for 2x8 mins yesterday, after struggling (really struggling) to run for 60 seconds at the beginning of Jan. Tomorrow I've got a 20 min run and can't wait to see what I'm capable of! If you need a virtual boot up the backside to give C25K a try, just shout - you'll get plenty! :p ...xx

Wow thats amazing, what a brilliant start you've had! Did you take your measurements at the start? If not, why not do them now, so that you can re-measure in future and see the changes. Think about your clothes too - does anything fit you better? If you have lost a little bit from everywhere it might not show hugely yet.

I cant afford the gym either - or a weightloss club - thats why I'm here! There's plenty of free exercise to be had though - walking is a really good idea, especially if you can go at a good pace.

You are doing really really well, keep it up!

Well done on your weight loss 🎉🎉 I would also really recommend Couch to 5K, another fabulous, free app from NHS Choices ... Learn to run with 'Laura' ... Good luck 🌷

Thank you! I will look into it but I am very self conscience so dont like people to watch me running as i feel like they are laughing as i am unfit but I will try it out! xx

I remember that feeling! The beauty of the C25K app is that it's broken down in to achievable weekly podcasts, with 'Laura's' help you can do it! Getting out there is the hardest part, give it a go, you'll be amazed at what you can do 🌻

Hi Lucyjane20

Wow, you are doing so well losing 12lbs in January is really good going. I'm like you can't afford the gym, I live on a very low budget, so I walk twice a day for about 30/40 minutes at a time.

Keep doing what your doing as it's working for you. If you have kids why not take them to the park with a ball and run round with them. If you have not already take a photo of yourself and in a month or so you will see the difference.

Have a good week.

Hi,

Thank you for your advice, I tried taking a photo but i think i look bigger now than I did before. I feel a lot more healthier within my self though!

If you can get into running, park runs are free and fun. Folk of all shapes and sizes, all ages and ability (it doesn't usually attract serious runners, so don't worry on that score.) Look up parkrun.org.uk to find out more.

Like most I can't afford the cost of a gym... my husband doesn't like the fitness dvd... I watched one to see if it's do-able.. he says our room is too small. It really is, but I got some ideas from the work outs and hope to try some of the moves little by little..

12 pounds in one month... I hope I can do as well as you... Seriously well done Lucyjane20 a great encouragement to carry on...

Hello Lucyjane20 and welcome to the weight loss forum ☺

The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you ☺

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news ☺

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate. Whilst exercise is important to lose weight it's more important to eat correctly ☺

The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, but they are very busy. If you wish to take part Sunday is the quietest day and you'd be very welcome to join. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.☺

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too

You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you may have a 'Newbie' badge. If you have any questions or would like a Newbie badge please just ask ☺

Best wishes

Anna

What a fantastic start, I wish you luck with the next steps. I have to walk at the moment as post operation, also not sure my knee would take running. Indeed it was damaging my knee that stopped me running and became the excuse for putting weight on!

I have found the MyFitnessPal app really helpful for calorie counting. I have also started a simple spreadsheet of foods/calories using the NHS calorie checker so that I can accurately count calories in my own recipes. I am finding it fun not a chore as I really enjoy cooking, although don't always have the time.

Keep up with whatever exercise you can, try to get a bit further in the same time by speeding up your walk.

Keep motivated, do it for you.
