Loosing weight after just having a baby

Hi there. I haven't posted for a while as I was pregnant and watching everything I ate wasn't top of my priorities but when I last weighed myself I was 28weeks pregnant and I weighed less than when i was book3d in pregnant at 7weeks. I stopped eating as much rubbish which helped the most.

Now baby is here and she is 5 days old. I knew I was determined to loose weight when she was born so here I am. Not sure where to start though. We are on a tight money budget so I can't afford lots of different dishes and I am annoyingly I admit a fussy eater. I haven't weighed since baby was born I'm abit scared to see what it says as I was very overweight when I got pregnant. I just need some help where do I start? I have 3 kids now so whatever I'm eating needs to fuel running after all of them !! :)

Hello SC94 Welcome to the Weight Loss Forum ☺

Congratulations on your new baby girl ☺☺☺ Also, very well done on cutting out the rubbish and not gaining weight during pregnancy ☺ thats a fantastic achievement, I gained about 4 stone!!!!

Have a good look around the forum especially the Newbies post (in the Pinned Posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile) and also the links to the NHS 12 week plan weight loss plan. This is an excellent plan with weekly email support. However, with a new baby I think you should speak to your midwife before you start just to make sure the plan is suitable ☺

The forum has weigh in threads on 6 days of the week that you are welcome to join, as well as regular challenges and progress 'badges' including a 'Newbie' one for when you first join the forum ☺ Please ask if you would like one ☺

Don't forget to take your initial measurements and photographs as it's a great way of seeing just how far you've come, especially when the scales aren't co-operating. ☺

We are a very friendly group so please ask if you have any questions

Best wishes

Anna

Congratulations on birth of your baby! I have 3 myself so know how exhausting it can be, and having time to prepare healthy meals on a tight budget is not easy. Are you breast feeding? It was the best way to lose baby weight I found! Your body is designed to store fat to nourish your new born. Also don't panic about losing weight straight away, I think it's horrendous the way we get bombarded with media images of celebrities looking like sticks 6 weeks after giving birth! Concentrate on healthy eating for you and your family, rather than weight and look after yourself and your little ones xx

Hi SC94 and welcome!

You have had some great advice already, but just wanted to chip in with a couple of pointers.

Each pregnancy is very different and if you are breastfeeding try to allow about two months before you restrict your calorie intake as you need to allow your milk supply to become established.

As well as helping the uterus to go back down to its normal size, breastfeeding burns 500-750 kcal per day, so you will probably find you won't need to tweak your diet that much in order to lose weight and in the next two weeks you will lose lots of water weight accumulated during the pregnancy. You are likely however to feel very hungry, so try to opt for things which will keep you fuller for longer: wholemeal varieties of bread, rice and pasta etc. cut down on sugar and drink plenty of water.

If you're not breastfeeding that's not to say you can't lose weight effectively, but I would give yourself a break until after your 6 week post natal check with your GP.

Once you're past your 6 week check, check out your local children's centres (which you probably already know from your other children), as they run some great groups giving support and guidance on healthy eating and some run buggysize classes where you can exercise with the buggy.

Lastly check out the change4life page, nhs.uk/change4life-beta/be-...

you can also down the app, for healthy eating recipes and tips.

Best of luck 🍀

I have a seven months old daughter and now I'm 12kg lighter than after birth. All I did was breastfeed and cook 90% of food fro. scratch. Had I kept track of portions and not eaten so many sweets and been more active, I'm sure I would have lost more.

The only way I can cook on a budget and not end up with food in the bin is planning the meals upfront every week.

Good luck! And keep on doing the right things you did in your pregnancy :)
