Struggling with bingeing

RobynMarian profile image

I binge regularly on chocolate. A lot of the time I use it secretly to get back at my partner but, for one, he knows nothing about it and, for two, I don't see how me eating chocolate to the max is any kind of retort to any kind of argument I'm sick of bingeing. Any tried and tested ways of stopping?

Hi RobynMarian,

Welcome to the NHS Weight Loss Forum here on HealthUnlocked - this forum is a great place for support, motivation and inspiration to lose weight. :)

Take a look at the NHS 12 Week Plan, it contains recipes and exercise plans to follow for the first twelve weeks of your journey. :D

Take a look at the left of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile device) and find the 'Pinned Posts' section, here you can find various challenges that are going on in the forum (take part in whatever ones take your fancy - if any do at all!), there is also a recipe collation there and any important posts from Admin

Also to your left is the 'Topics' area, here you can find posts related to each topic, it's good if you are looking for something specific

The Monday Group Weigh In takes place weekly and is posted alternately by Zest and moreless (I suggest you follow them, they are also our site admins), a morning session post is put live just before 06:30 and runs until midday, while the afternoon session runs from midday until 18:00 on the Friday of that week - it'll be running as usual this coming Monday, so, if you wish, you can go and post your starting weight there! :P

All that remains is to wish you a great first week on the forum - be involved because it's where we get our boost each day

Rob :D

Thanks so much Rob for a lovely welcoming welcome 😊 I have followed the admin, as advised, and once I read all my replies I will get a look at the pinned post and challenges. See you at weigh in tomorrow and thanks again

Hi and welcome to this friendly forum.👍

I can see Rob has pointed you in the right direction, hope you join in with us tomorrow for the weigh ins.

I used to buy chocolate on a almost daily basis but since I joined the forum I have very little, my one vice now is Aldi mini sea salt or 70% dark chocolate at 140 calls a bar also you can still have whatever you fancy just add to your allowance. 2 finger kit Kats are only 104 calls too.

It's not easy starting a new lifestyle journey but it gets easier as the weeks go on. Why not start today finding out your allowance using the BMI calculator leave a few calories aside for your daily chocolate treat and as the day's progress and your understanding of what's in our foods progresses you will probably find you start to say no and use the calories in a more beneficial way.

The only person you are hurting is yourself when you eat to get back at your hubby do the opposite get fitter, healthier and keep him on his toes.

Best wishes Bev

Hi Bev, thanks also for a lovely welcome. I'm glad I made the choice to sign up now. Yip, I will join you all at tomorrow's weigh in, definitely! 😊

I hope the same happens for me as has for you, with the chocolate I mean. I know I shouldn't binge to get back at him and for any other reason but I do it all the same. I am really hoping the 12 weeks will jolt my body or flick an invisible switch to stop it. See you in the morning. 😊

Good to know you will be with us tomorrow, don't worry I have been on lots of fad diets and to be honest this is the only one I have stuck to for so long, 23 weeks, usually I would only make 6-8 weeks.

I think the difference is this forum and the help, supportive advice everyone gives you there's always someone to speak to so next time you feel like chocolate come on here and moan to us we all help each other.

The 12 week plan also is easy to follow and you really do start to think differently about food on this plan. A good thing about it is as I have been eating healthily my husband has started to watch what he eats too, so win, win😊

People do strange things in relationships. In a couple we often take on parent-child behaviour. When my partner is feeling nagged or peed off with me, he stops for a pint on the way home just to make some kind of point .... that's the boy-child thing ( and he's 66 😁)

Really elliebath? So it never changes? Haha, it is when he reacts like a boychild that I am most at a loss. But yes. Eating was a coping mechanism as a child but I never gained weight through it. As a grown up and, more precisely, since becoming a mummy I haven't gotten away with bingeing and no weight gain. Plus I don't want to pass bad habits to my children. Thanks for reply and advice 😊

Well in my case I know it is usually triggered by some behaviour on my part, but happily nowadays we recognise what's happening, then kiss and get over it.

You have identified the source of your chocolate binges as being upset with your boyfriend. The next step is to avoid the trigger. We can't control other peoples' behaviour but we can control how we react to it. You need to either learn to let go of the hurt or be honest and tell him that arguing with him upsets you so much that it makes you comfort eat, if he knows how his behaviour affects you he may be less inclined to argue.

I agree slimpickings. Can I ask, how has everyone put up the mini tags of 1stone, 5 stone, I did it etc?

I think you go to the pinned posts and find badges. The thread started 2 months ago but people seem to go there for badges. Xx

I agree, will power rarely works with urges to binge, you have to remove as many triggers as you can. having a talk with your boyfriend is a good idea. good luck and best wishes. ☺

Thanks albinohedgehog. Aye, will power is an alien concept to me 😊 Hoping a focus on eating healthily and identifying my root causes will help me on my way

You can totally get out the habit of binging. I used to binge alot, like a good 4 times a week. im alot better at dealing with emotions now, partly because ive moved out of the stressful situation i was in, and so am just happier. Also partly because when i do feel bad i just allow myself to feel bad, without trying to make it go away. i still do binge sometimes, but they are normally smaller binges and only happen every month or so if im really exhausted or something.

It is possible to avoid binging. You can do it. 👍 ☺

Thanks for sharing, it helps to talk with someone who deals with it and has made a significant change. I don't know if I need to leave but it has crossed my mind. Just have to work on being honest with myself about what I want rather than being my default - people pleaser - thanks for listening. What you've said has struck a chord 😊

Thank you MW50, wise words and definitely something I should put into practise. He isn't the sole reason but I do recognise i have a problem in how I react to stress and stressful situations. Thanks again, I appreciate your advise.
