Feeling a bit down

Is it normal to reach a point on your weight loss journey where the thought of having to eat food that's bad for you makes you feel sick?

I don't know if I'm over-reacting or feeling a bit under the weather but I have to have a family Chinese (takeaway) later and I'm not looking forward to it. I'm actually going to eat a selection of small snacks (mugshot, yoghurt, banana) before I go so I don't end up ravenous when I eat very little.

Is this normal? has anyone else ever lost their taste for fatty foods that they used to love?

I agreed that I could have three slices of (home cooked, not takeaway) pizza on Monday evening, and when it was on my plate I just couldn't face it. and I love pizza. This is making me feel a bit down as I used to like having treats and enjoying them, I don't want that to go away forever - even though it's good for my waist, I don't want the enjoyment to drop out of food.

  • I dont think you have lost your taste for fatty foods, its the fact you have become more aware of what you eat and how it affects you

  • I don't enjoy a Chinese takeaway these days. My stomach churns with the thought of eating it.

    OH cooked last night and we had a pudding, - first one for weeks and I only had a little. I have felt sick since, even woke up this morning feeling queasy. Think its because I don't have anything that sweet and I'm just not used to it anymore.

  • I think once you get in the ‘zone’ and having success with losing weight you feel that a supposedly non healthy meal will sabotage your efforts. One meal though is only one of 21 in a week and as long as you don’t overdo it, will be fine. There will be plenty of occasions where you are not totally in control of what food is offered and you have to find strategies to really enjoy the meal/ night out etc, maybe eat a little less the next day, that is what I do, as long as most of your meals are healthy it will even out overall.   • I don't think is a negative at all!! You should feel proud of your healthier taste buds 😊 I also had a Chinese take away at the weekend and was disappointed with it 😕 But congratulated myself on my restraint and healthy lifestyle 😊

  • Personally I love Chinese and haven't gone off any food that's not considered healthy. Might I suggest if you are ordering your own dishes, ask for plain rice and Chinese vegetables (which are not bad for you) and offer to share them so you don't have to eat too much. Otherwise just ask for the vegetables and maybe share a little of someone else's dish.

    Either way, enjoy being with your family, that's more important than the food 👍

  • Thank you for your advice :) Unfortunately someone has pre-ordered a selection of dishes, none of which I was hugely fond on to begin with, but I will keep your advice in mind.

  • Is it not possible to speak to the person who ordered and explain that the dishes are not to your liking, perhaps ask for a veggie dish for yourself.

    If this is something that happens occasionally (and it's always Chinese takeaway when my family all get together, although we all make our own choices), mention your preferences well in advance so the ordering is inclusive of your healthy eating plan.

    Whatever happens, enjoy what you do eat 👍

  • I don't think I have really noticed a difference. But then, I've been trying to build my meals so I can have an occasional take out, dinner out, birthday cake, etc. So I haven't really given anything up, I just have them less often and in smaller portions so I guess I haven't gotten used to not having them as you have.

    I have noticed that I can't eat as much in one sitting as I used to though. Amounts I would have been fine with previously I find now make me feel sick. :P

    Everybody's different so changing eating habits is bound to affect everybody somewhat differently. :)

  • I think it is more your mind more than your taste buds that have changed. You are more aware and perhaps knowing what high salt/fatty foods can do to the body you're making foods you use to enjoy now seem unappealing; it's amazing what we're capable of. :P

  • That's true. I don't avoid natural fat because I don't heed the flawed dogma anymore.

  • Exactly, fat is good for us, especially the natural kind. Everything in moderation. :)

  • I had the same feeling as you a week ago when I went to a 12 year old's family birthday party. I really hated the greasiness of it all, (there were things everyone else was clearly enjoying like fried chicken pieces/chips, chicken wings and it wasn't at all what I expected to feel. I was a bit shocked to be honest.

    The birthday cake was dry too and I didn't enjoy any of it.
