I've recently joined a gym but find going on my own and having no one to talk to or push me, it gets very boring then I get that can't be bothered going tomorrow feeling and so on. Anyone else ever felt like this or it just me been soft? I've asked friends and family to come with me but like there all thin naturally so not interested

Hi Nath123,

I'm more of a swimming kind of girl than a gym kind of girl, if you see what I mean. It's rather hard to talk and swim at the same time. Unless you're a fish! :)

Does your gym do classes? It could be worth looking into as you won't be on your own and will get to meet new people. I know many on this forum enjoy going to classes and trying new things.

Good Luck! :)

Have you got a good pair of earphones/ headphones? Listening to great music or a gripping story can make all the difference...

I love the gym but I know exactly what you mean- I moved to a new town recently, and would really like to meet some friends at the gym (my boyfriend wont exercise with me), but I'm fairly shy so I don't tend to start conversations.

I reckon the best way to make "gym buddies" is to go to exercise classes- choose one in particular, that you decide you like, and go every week. You will meet others that go every week, might take a few weeks and that but you and the instructor and the others will get chatting eventually- because you'll recognise eachother as familiar faces.

I went to my second spin class yesterday and at the end the instructor chatted to me and that was nice. I wish there were more "social" groups round where in am In Salisbury, in Bath (where I've moved from) there was always lots of groups and clubs and thing (probably because of the Universities and the theatre and that) but where I am there doesn't seem to be any running/cycling groups/clubs.

When I was still fairly new to this country I started volunteering as a way to get out and meet people. It got me out of the house, didn't cost me any money, and I felt good about giving back.

It might not necessarily be a part of weight loss, but I think it's essential for my all around good health as mental wellbeing is definitely a part of being healthy! :)

It may be possible to take part in a class at your gym. This would put you alongside others who feel the same way. New friends with a common goal, what could be better?

I've never been a gym type person but I think that is because I'm quite socially anxious so I instantly feel on edge and quite paranoid in places like that where I know nobody. I would love to work up the courage to go to a gym further down the line but right now I'm happy doing my yoga in the comfort of my own home. I think that you have to find something you really enjoy, or like others have said, maybe try a class or two. Best of luck to you.

Hi nath123 😀

Have you thought of organising a few sessions with one of the trainers at the gym they may be able to introduce you to people and help your with the equipment so you get the most out of your gym time 🏋🏃

If not ... download your favourite music or book onto your phone (or other device) pop in you headphones and you can be in your own little bubble while you work out xx

Thanks for all the replies. I had also looked at a few of the classes but I have very bad confidence and especially with been a young male. I don't think I would fit in with a load of woman in a keep fit class

You might find yourself extremely popular all of a sudden if you were the only male....

More seriously, ask at your local bike shop if they know of any cycling clubs or groups that you could join? Also, look into the local Ramblers groups if you like country walks - they always attract a wide variety of people of all ages, and you get to chat as you walk ...or not as you prefer.

Regarding the Gym - all the above suggestions are great; and also look at their notice boards for running clubs or circuit training. If they have a notice board, you could ask if you could put up a notice to invite other new members to join you for some running or squash games if they have courts. Often the staff are keen to organise things to keep their clients motivated!

I joined the gym and was probably the most unfit person there. Health problems meant I could only do a little and very slowly leading to a very derogatory comment from a gym bunny! I basically told him that health problems meant I could only go slowly but was not there to try and beat anyone else or feel superior. He left pretty shamefaced and I had not realised how many people had listened. I then realised that although I found it boring and felt like the tortoise amongst the hares it was for my good and no one elses. I also allow myself a treat afterwards (not of the sweet variety) and this gives me some incentive. I have found that even a little helps over time
