I have a big bowl when I know I'm working through lunch. Mines with a cheeky spoon of nuttela, banana and raisins. Bloody love it. I also do peanut butter and low sugar jam one too but you can throw anything into some nice porridge. Yummy x

20g of golden syrup is only 67 calories. I add that each time I have it.

Or buy the already flavoured sachets.

I've been adding one heaped teaspoon of zero-sugar reduced-fat pure cocoa powder, and one sachet of stevia (1 g). Nice if you like chocolaty taste.

Overnight oats the best breakfast ever !!! 35g porridge oats mixed with any low fat yoghurt add frozen fruit cover and leave in fridge overnight . In the morning you have delicious healthy breakfast . You can add any fruit i especially like a caramel yoghurt, in the morning add grated apple and cinnamon or toffee yoghurt and chopped banana . I always add the fresh fruit in the morning And frozen fruit overnight . Just try it and you will enjoy it

I've wanted to try this for months but just haven't gotten around to it. Have you tried mixing the oats with skyr? I'm a vegetarian and have to look for max protein in everything I eat, so if skyr works just as well as yoghurt, that's perfect for me.

yes I used Skyr with honey it worked well.

I make mine with half oats, half reduced sugar Swiss style muesli, and when ready mix some fresh blueberries through it - yum! or you can sweeten just ate with ground almonds notepad of sugar.

I use Stevia to sweeten my porridge and sprinkle cinnamon on top, sometimes I also add sultanas for added sweetness 🍲 very yummy 😄

slimpickings profile image

A small spoonful of sultana s and a pinch of nutmeg. It reminds me of rice pudding, sort of!! Xx

Same for me - if you soak the sultanas in the milk you are going to use overnight they go all plump and moist. Whack in the oats, quick stir, two mins in the microwave on medium and then sprinkle on some nutmeg and cinnamon - easy, peasy.

Love porridge, had some today. If you have time quickly stew some bramley apple to go with and a spot of natural/greek yogurt. The apple will need a sweetener added. I swear stewed apple is the homliest smell there is!

Hi there

Porridge. One of the best starts to the day that you can get but please please ditch the sugar. Try it with a different milk. Rice milk or coconut milk. I use almond milk (unsweetened) as its less calories than semi. Also I sometimes add a banana which is a great way of sweetening the porridge, bulking it out and adding vitamin B6 and a good source of manganese, vitamin C, potassium, dietary fiber, potassium, biotin, and copper.

You can always add chocolate, yet I said chocolate but a low calorie chocolate sauce made without added sugar. They are called choc shots by Sweet Freedom. Only 14 calories per teaspoon (less than actual sugar)

Good luck and keep up the good work

Chocshots can be spread on a crisp bread for a chocky fix too!!

Yes I just read that sweetners are just as bad as sugar and should be avoided . I gave up sugar and after a bit any grain of it is too much although still struggle with the odd cake and biscuit haha

in reply to Lella

The chocshots don't contain any sweeteners. Just natural ingredients and natural sugars. Always a good idea to stay away from artificial sweeteners. I just gave up sugar in drinks and now actually enjoy coffee without sugar.....

Oh thanks I haven't tried choc shots will try ... Yes I used to have two sugars in my hot drinks but now I can tell if somebody used the same spoon as somebody who takes sugar

I think that is right about sweeteners. I rather pigged out onceon chocolate with no added sugar(it was stevia)and ended up with a bad dose of \ibs.\now that is added to my list of triggers! I do add sugar but only a teasp. of demerara (count calories) it takes the edge off and I also add some frozen fruit

a handful) and only use 1oz porridge with water. Very healthy!

Hi I usually add some form of fruit but I have also added just a small amount of coconut,

I have just bought a fruit based sweetener fron Aldi ( looks like honey) I have yet to use it, if anyone has used it and has any ideas about it let me know. Bev

Lella profile image
Lella in reply to Itsbab

Yes I got something similar it's like dark honey but made from dates ... Think you can just use in anything but you end up using a lot less because it's so sweet ...better than any artificial sugar I think

Porridge is one of my absolute favourite meals! It's like a big bowl of dessert :)

I start with 80 grams of blueberries, add 50 grams of Sainsbury's porridge oats with oatbran and wheat bran, two teaspoons of cinnamon (my hand sometimes slips when I'm doing this and I accidentally get more ...), and 30 grams of flaxseed. I add about 280 ml of cold water then microwave the whole thing until the berries burst. This is about 5 minutes in my microwave (without the flaxseed it's about half that).

Once I have that beautiful bowl of oat and berry goodness, I add a sliced banana.

I occasionally add extras, e.g. raspberries, ginger, a teaspoon of organic honey or some cocoa nibs.

I used to make it with unsweetened almond milk, but water works fine for me (it took me a few days to get used to it when I switched).

Stir in a few squares of dark chocolate for about 100 extra cals. Great for PMT when you want chocolate all day. Well i do anyway. X

Raspberries and a squirt of maple syrup with a few pecan nuts on top for me!

Lippysue profile image

I adore my porridge every day. I usually add blueberries and strawberries, in the winter frozen ones are good.

I don't add any sweetener of any kind. If you give up sugar, after a while naturally sweet things like berries are quite sweet enough.

Home made stewed Apple, cinnamon and dollop of Greek - YUMMY in my tummy! :-D

Hello, can't you add a bit of artificial sweetener? In the wider schemes of things a tsp or two of sweetener is not going to harm you if it means you get your porridge down you.

I actually think that porridge is one of the most versatile cereals oforhaving with other things (weetabix also excellent for mixing and matching).

Have you tried a teaspoon of cocoa powder and half a banana? This is really delicious. The cocoa powder (not drinking chocolate) is good for you, and the whole thing tastes just like chocolate. Lovely!

I also love porridge with berries and walnuts or pecans. Superb!
