Newbie - wanting tips on resisting temptation

Hi - I am new to Health Unlocked. I am looking to lose weight and get a bit fitter. Has anyone any tips on how to avoid temptation and cravings? Unfortunately, I have a sedentary job and my desk is situated next to the 'goodies' cupboard and neither can be moved. Even though my partner knows I want to lose weight, he is always asking 'do you fancy ....?' Mainly because he fancies something and is as skinny as owt (sorry Yorkshire). So any ideas would be welcome.

Hi and welcome castiggy :)

I'm afraid that when push comes to shove, we just have to muster up all the willpower we can :)

I would try and get your partner on board and ask him to respect your desire to lose weight.

I realised that sugar made me crave sugar, so I took it off the menu completely! My cravings went with it :) I'm not saying that this is the way forward for you, just that it was what I needed to do :)

A "goody"cupboard in the work place could maybe be changed to a healthy snack station, which you could suggest to your work colleagues. You could also encourage more movement at work too eg standing up and walking around regularly, using the stairs, walking to work/parking further away/getting off the bus/train at an earlier stop, etc :)

Have a look at the Pinned Posts section, to the right of your screen, (bottom if you're on a mobile) and read our Welcome Newbie post. It has a link to the NHS 12 week plan, which is a great place to start. It doesn't give a specific diet plan, but gives guidelines for healthy eating.

Consider signing up for any, or all of our challenges, as they're fun and motivating.

We also have a monday group weigh-in and if you click follow on my profile, you'll get a notification when I post it on monday. You can have a look at the latest thread in the events section, to the right of the home page.

Be active on the forum, as that's where we meet to exchange ideas and get our daily fix of inspiration and motivation :)

Wishing you all the very best :)

The only sure-fire way I've found to avoid temptation is not to have it in the house. It's much easier to resist candy/chocolate/cake/treats when you don't have any! :)

(By that point in the evening I'm also going to be too lazy to go out and buy anything :D )

In regards to your work situation, I have been there. What I have done is to plan my meals ahead including the times when I am going to eat. It is simple if it is not on your plan you do not eat it. This could apply to hubby as well. Mine is very slim and eats continuously. I stick to my plan, I am the one who wants to lose weight so I need to do the work. Revise your reasons to lose weight.

There are two schools of thought on this, some allow a little if it's REALLY worth the calories, others prefer to keep temptation well out of the way!! I do both, allow myself a treat now and agsin if I really fancy it, cheese/gin being my two treats 😊 But I darent go near a box of chocolates as I would eat the lot!!

I always try to ask myself "which would I prefer? This treat or to lose weight?"

Good luck!
