COPD sufferer who wants to lose 2 stone to make her breathing easier

Hi everyone, I'm 64 and suffer with COPD.. Some days I can't breathe well so find exercise very difficult but I do walk my two dogs daily, sometimes longer and further than others.

I think losing weight will ease my breathing, less weight to haul around, so tips and advice would be much appreciated.

I have to take steroids regularly when I get infections and these don't help with weight loss I understand but they are a necessary evil I'm afraid.

Also where on this site do I get the 12 week plan from, I've put it in the search engine but it's not coming up.

Thanks for reading, I look forward to all your comments.

This is me at the back.

Hi Cheddar52 and welcome this is a fantastic forum full of support, advice and encouragement. I can see Moorless has given you all the info you need. My dad has miners lung and is on medication too for his breathing his way of keeping his weight under control is gardening but it works for him. I started on my journey because I had put so much weight on even going up a small hill made my heart pound and gasp so I am now on week 12 of the 12 week plan ( going to start it again next week as I have still got a lot to loose ) but I can see the benefits already 1st 11lbs lighter and breathing so much better.

I too take the dogs but have a treadmill to help also, I use a fitness tracker to encourage me to do more.

Good luck on your journey I am sure you will feel the benefits from a little weight loss. Lovely picture by the way. 😊👍 Bev

Hi, thanks for replying, I do my own gardening too and also have a treadmill and a Fitbit watch, before this latest chest infection which has left me very low I was walking over 10k steps a day, I'm lucky at the moment to manage 5k!! But getting checked out by my doctor again today and then hopefully I can Move forward once again. I think I need to lose at least 1 and a half stone, will check this afternoon. I have the slimming world cookbooks which are brilliant cos you are never hungry so I may use them to. I will keep posting. Thanks for the support.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I am 76 and in exactly the same position as you, with COPD and all that that involves, multiple inhalers ,antibiotics and occasional steroids . And like you unable to exercise like others. Apart from walking as much asI can manage I found a DVD called Smile and Sway. It is seated exercise based on dance, samba, foxtrot etc. You can do as much or as little as you want and being that bit different is quite fun. There are other seated exercise DVDs on Amazon if you are interested. Good luck with your weight loss .

I've got COPD too and exercise is really helping my breathing. I've started an exercise classes and the first one I did I needed my inhaler halfway. Now I take my inhalers before and I'm much better. I've also got an exercise bike.
