Hi there just joined today am 30 and am seriously over weight. According to my BMI i am 2.5 stone over weight 😥. Becoming depressed . Need help!

HI VickyJ,

Welcome to the NHS weight loss forum. I would recommend reading our Welcome Newbie post - it's in the Pinned posts area - top right-hand-side of the homepage, and it will tell you about the various things members like in the forum. I'd also recommend looking at the NHS 12 week plan as a good structure to follow.

Good morning Vicky, just a quick post to say the 12 week plan is really good and worth trying. I also use the myfitnesspal ap to track calories (it is free).

Set yourself some small goals initially and take it one day at a time. It gets easier and then before you know it you will start to see results and feel fitter.

Slow and steady is good, so that you keep the weight off, so don't worry if you only lose 1-2 pounds per month.

You can do it!! x

Hey VickyJ,

It's good to have you here. I 've been a bit of a serial dieter over the years. My weight has been up and down like a brides nightie. I have suffered from depression as well for a number of years and fundamentally I know it's because of my weight. So it's a bit of a no brainer for me. Lose weight and I will be happier. It sounds simple but it's working for me. I know that your head has to be in the right place to allow you to be motivated to start and then continue on your journey. I promise you that once you start it becomes easier. The first couple of weeks are a battle but read the 12 week plan, write everything you eat down and be honest with yourself. Buy a fitbit or an exercise smartband and get out for a walk. My fitbit has made such a big difference getting me off the couch and out walking. When you step on the scales each week and you see the weight come off it will be a huge motivator. Your clothes will feel looser and people will comment on how good you look. Reward yourself with non food related items. I got a tattoo. I didn't tell the wife and she noticed while we were on holiday about 6 months later.

I have a serious amount of weight to lose. In fact its almost 6 times more than you. I set myself small targets and know that eventually I will get there. In 10 weeks I've lost 30 pounds and I'm slowly fading away to a mountain. You have about 35 pounds to lose. If you lose an average of 2lbs a week you will meet your target well before Xmas. Make a commitment to yourself and go for it :)

For me this forum has definitely been a motivator. So many folk, all pulling in the same direction. They are positive and supportive and inspirational. You can do it VickyJ. No time like the present. I wish you every success. Keep us posted on your success.

Thank you for your kind words and advice! Its is so hard sticking to it and not eating chocolate which is my biggest down fall.

Becoming depressed will not help Take some positive steps to turn your life around. Make a plan, decide how you want to tackle the journey ahead of you, are you going to try the NHS 12 week plan? or just follow a low calorie plan?

Check out your personal calorie requirement to lose the weight and set yourself small goals to reach along the way.

dont worry too much vicky most people on here are very over weight i started 3 years ago on 22 stone try to eat veg less meat cut carbs and sugar and fat and alcohol, drink lots of water ,join a group for support i found slimming world helped a lot,, or weight watchers also this site is good for you plenty of encouragement is here. have lost 3 stone and half since last year now down to 15 stone 5 lbs my bmi was 40 now its 32 i have another 2.5 stone to go. it takes time also found exercise like walking is good.good luck

I run a group where I live to help people lose weight without going on a diet. Here is my video for this week. Have a look. See if it helps you any and above all good luck and stay focused. I've lost 145lbs and kept it off.

Hi Vicky J I take the BMI like I do my hard boiled egg - with a pinch of salt. Leave it, you can come back to it when you're well on the way to your target weight, it is then far less daunting IMO. I was 3 stone overweight 10 weeks ago and now am 1st 1lb over and close to my BMI but I feel loads more than two thirds of the way there. If you google "new BMI" you'll get a slightly better result but I wouldn't worry just check out all the tips and guides here and keep posting and keep us all up to date with your progress. Onwards and downwards! :-)

I'm going to disagree with Suezann re losing just 1-2lb a month. I think if you really focus and stick to a proper plan, you could get rid of your 2.5 stone, or most of it, by Christmas. I think 1-2lb a week is a safe weight loss, and at least you feel that you're getting somewhere. Plus you get the job done and it isn't hanging over your head for ages.

Of course, if you're patient and can accept 1-2lb a month, that's fine too. The main thing is to get the weight off and not put it back on again.

There is a bit of a dispute in the medical world at the moment about slow and steady versus fast weight loss. Up until recently the accepted view has been that slow and steady is much better, but now faster weight loss seems to be getting more fans, eg Dr Michael Mosley is a fan of losing quickly and argues that this is much better than taking it slow.

I don;t know what the truth is! I suppose whatever works for you is best!

Anyway, good luck with it. Although 2.5 stone might seem a lot to you, it is definitely do-able, and it's worth really going for it.

Hey, as you probably can see with those messages you are not on your own. Tell us a little bit more about yourself, whatever you feel comfortable with talking about. Have you heard of Weight Ahead? it is an NHS programme to help people to lose weight. Take it "one meal at the time" otherwise it could become a bit too overwhelming. Keep in touch

I think. The good news is at 30 your metabolism is still high. I am 62 and I am going down a bit at a time. That's it though. Reduce your calorie intake and try to eat real food where you know what you are eating. Slowly increase your exercise. Walking and steps are good.. You don't have to lose 2.5 stone you have to lose a pound and then another pound. You plan your meals in advance. It needs to be a life thing I think. I love wine and beer I am away in Spain on hols st the moment but I just drink Diet Coke or water instead. I was sick of the rolls of fat on my body. I started like you with 2.5 to lose I need to lose another stone. I don't know if I am doing well or not as there are no scales here but I am doing lots of swimming. Well on with the sun tan cream and off to swim in the sea good luck I hope you can get in the zone.

Hiiii, when I began this programme my BMI was 30!!! I've lost 2 stones ever since and I dropped my BMI below 25 in 4 months. People barely recognise me when we meet on the street!!

My BMI was at 30 and more when I started looking at it (I have ignored it for too many years...) a few weeks ago and this community + nhs plan is really helping (much more than running has done so far... in fact I think running helped me gaining a couple of kilos if nothing...)
