Welcome to the Weight Loss forum Anaverageman!

Well there's already this... which is a great compilation in itself... healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

But I think you're after those lightbulb/turning point sorts of moments...

For me, my turning point was couch to 5k - realising I had it in me to make major changes myself

Then finding the weekly weigh in on here, combined with following the NHS 12 week plan

Counting calories, watching my food groups, and filling out myfitnesspal, although obvious, all this stuff was really effective

Realising my medical issues were exacerbated by weight and lack of fitness

Realising my medical issues nearly 100% disappeared after fixing my diet and reducing my weight - this is keeping me going still!

Finding a great fresh and affordable local greengrocers - I love getting the veg in now!

For me it was the realisation that 'diets' don't work but simply eating just a little bit less, most of the time, with just a little extra movement, could lead to long term weight loss 😊 Then the fitter I became the more I wanted better fitness, the less sugar I ate the less I wanted it, and gradually over 10 months my whole outlook has changed 😊😊😊

So many light bulb moments for me. This week's is discovering that the research that showed drinking water half an hour before eating means that what I do eat is more satisfying. I'm a large thirsty person so I have been having a pint or 500ml. But I think the research suggested less would do. Had no problem sticking to my plan when I have the water. And felt surprisingly full for the last 6 days. I am not very good at drinking water usually, but I found warm water was easier most days, although the recent heatwave has got me reaching for the ice instead.

Yes, I saw that article!! This site has been promoting drinking enough water for ages, good to know we are on trend!! 😊

500 ml bout 30 mins to 1 hr before eating is what they found worked... so you are spot on - think the water before meals group lost on average about 3- 4 kg more than weight loss only groups after 3 months if memory serves me correct

When I first started trying to lose weight I found writing a food and drink diary useful. Basically a list every day with calories worked out. Educates you on calories and makes you think more about what you eat/drink.

I am still on the journey......Bit rocky sometimes....but that's life. For me it's giving up all refined sugar. Full stop. No biscuits sweets, chocolate, puddings, desserts (I do eat yogurts)....The feel good feeling of not having them for me equals the weight loss result..I can't have that small piece of cake or couple of pieces of chocolate, I would always over do it. So they have gone.....! Just coming up to a year now....

i think we should be less ' hard' on ourselves if we do ' slip'.. life is for enjoying too after all.. and its long term that counts not whether we ate a cake today or not..

I have to ban all sweet things completely. I can't just have a couple of pie es of chocolate or one or two biscuits. I have to eat the lot!! If they are not in the cupboard, I'm ok and don't crave them.

not having them around helps with will power.. ( or my lack of it)

my turning point anaverageman, was when I decided I was fine the way I was, I just wanted to be healthy and stop hurting everywhere! I write down everything I eat with no cheating and then see where I can cut a bit out everyday. I love the apple suggestion, it helps me when I want a sweet, I eat an apple. even with a little peanut butter, it is a delightful snack. I also realize that I need to move more and not just sit in front of the computer every minute I am not at work and that helped me too. I am sure you will get lots of good advice on here. I know I have. good luck to us all!

Great question, as I'm just starting tomorrow, it would be interesting to know what works for others

that was the idea...

The food diary idea has been absolutely central to my success. Mostly because it helped me know what worked and what didn't. It really helped me identify my mistakes. And I made them all, so that was a significant factor. It gives you insight into the process and (sorry for the management speak) creates a virtuous circle of feedback!

think we can ignore the management speak (under the circumstances).... so its basically a 'win-win scenario' for you ;)
