Going up and then going down.

So after being so pleased to lose a stone, I thought I would relax a bit. After two weeks of what I thought would be a relaxed but not over indulgent period I found I had put on two pounds, so two weeks later I've now lost those two pounds again how annoying, still onwards and hopefully downwards from now on (he says optimistically)......

Hi Cliff, that is rather annoying! I think we've all been there. I yo-yoed between 14 and 15 stone for ages before finding the NHS 12-week plan and finding where I went wrong. I did the same thing you did, I lost a bit and then thought I could relax. Problem was, I was relaxing too much! I think for me, once I get to the stage where I can maintain, the trick will be to still keep track of what and how much I'm eating until I've developed a new and better sense of how much I can eat before gaining weight.

Somebody posted on here that it takes 40 weeks or something like that to get your hormones to cooperate once you've stopped loosing weight. I'm sure somebody else will remember better than I where it was from!

But 2 lbs is only a little bit, you've now got rid of the gain, and have learned something as well! It all helps towards the final goal and it's baby steps and small goals until then. You'll get there, just take it one day at a time. :)

Hi cliffhilton1969 , Oh so know that feeling. Some of my lbs loved me so much they hung around for months, popping in and out, now I see them, then I don't.

I don't think a month is enough time to learn to eat sensibly without having and sticking to a plan. After all, it has taken most of us decades to put this weight on, it might take us months to learn how to take it off. Once our foot is off the accelerator, we slow down. Or stop! And in your and my cases, start to roll back down the hill!

You can probably relax on holidays if you determinedly increase your activity. But you would still need a plan, even if it was a more relaxed one.

What we both need to recognise is that we put the weight on while "eating normally" so we need to learn to "eat healthily". And for some of us that is learning portion control.

I got fat eating too large portions of mostly healthy food. Because I judged my portion sizes by those around me, who were simply bigger people, with higher metabolic rates. And, to be honest, I had no idea about portion sizes, even the much larger ones we have nowadays. Even though I reached my goal weight last week, I still automatically weigh foods onto my plate and measure drinks into my cup or glass at home. We can learn these things till they become almost automatic. I can now taste how much oil is used by the restaurant and tell by looking if a potato portion is twice what it should be. And my tummy tells me by feeling full sooner too.

So stick at it. Once you have built those habits, you can relax a little and let them carry you through, with just occasional checking. I once managed to lose half a lb while on a three week cruise. And I did indulge at both the table and bar, I just didn't go mad.

Venus.
