Hi all,

Please run away, save yourselves!! Hehe. I just wanted to rant.. I eat when I am stressed / anxious. 3 times this week I have eaten 3 boxes of chocolate fingers and wispa biscuits. Weight has increased a lot. GP is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Would like to regain control.

What's your motivation?

Yoga is great for stress or anxiety, it's helped me in the past. I'm trying to stick to my mindfulness practice which has helped me a lot too and I'm back into my yoga, I've missed it. Free videos on youtube

Forward planning is helpful; cook some low-fat, low-sugar treats to freeze and get out when needed.  Fill up on homemade soup and try and keep the house free of temptations like chocolate fingers etc.  If you have children, choose your least favourite biscuits (for them), and keep them on a high shelf.  Lastly, don't beat yourself up for what has been and gone; look ahead and think one day at a time.  You will feel so pleased with yourself once you have a few good days under your belt!

Hi. You can do it, I have a substitute now for those chocolate biscuits and it has worked!  I have a yogurt or a drink and what used to be a walk  ( now developed to a jog ) then decide if I really want the biscuit when I come back . I go out what  ever the weather ( something I would have never dreamt of doing before :-) )   I love being out in all weathers and come in energised.  Sorry you feel your gp is useless, but it's our health, our weight, our biscuits , our choices.

You can do it ,  the fact you are in this forum shows you can , find something else to do before you have that biscuit then decide if you really want it . We are all battling together and we can all do it

GOod luck , and go for a new you

What a good idea Molly. I'm always tempted by sweet things and don't buy biscuits etc but my husband does and I can always smell them out!! Now I'll try going out for a walk and then decide if I really want it.

 Hi zc1981,

A bit of tough love on offer here.  So don't read on unless you are feeling strong enough.

Stop buying them.   Don't have these trigger foods in the house.  Other adults can go and buy their own, if they miss them.  I used to offer housekeeping money for the treats.  Almost nobody needs added sugar including little kids (if you are feeding some).  And if they really do need something because they're very skinny and can't last between meals, get them used to snacking on carrot sticks and a dip, fruit, peanut butter on toast etc or give them some extra small meals.  If they say they really want to have chocolate and you agree it is appropriate, take them to a shop and let them choose to buy something small which they eat on the way home.  Teach them about budgeting by setting one so that they have to make choices.  While they do this consider buying yourself a non eating treat like a favourite magazine.  So you can have a cuppa and a few minutes of peace when you get home.  Your eating habits are causing you problems, why would you want to duplicate that in another generation?  Nothing happens if you or they are hungry between meals.  You just get to enjoy the next meal more.

Your stress is making you feel the need for quick energy.  Have you ever considered managing the stress rather than feeding it?  There are loads of stress managing techniques you could learn.  Try googling and see what might suit you.  Your GP might be saying to you that the answer to your problems is in your own hands.  You want a magic wand to be waved to save you from yourself.  (We all want this, a magic solution, that is why all these mad slimming pill ideas gain sales.)  You might be the kind of person who benefits from a slimming club type arrangement, if you can find one that suits you, rather than another "help" for you to rebel against when you feel stressed.  Next time you feel that panic and want to eat, try having a prepared or pre planned snack, perhaps including some protein.  Maybe with one of your favourite fruits.  I am having fresh raspberries with full fat Greek yogurt at the moment.  But only 40g of rasps and a teaspoon of the yog.  It feels really luxurious if I eat it very slowly with a teaspoon.  Then you would be giving yourself some fuel that will help you deal with the stress rather than something that just makes your body more stressed in the long run.

I'm not good at this healthy eating lark.  It took me 4 years to lose my 5 stone, because life got in the way.  I both celebrated and comforted myself with food when I started.  But healthy habits are learnable.  Just not in the face of a chocolate and biscuit cupboard shouting "Eat me" every time you go into the kitchen.  If you set yourself up to fail, you will fail.  Although you will comfort yourself with the idea that it isn't your fault.  Then you will live with the results of "dieting" alternated with bingeing and your eating habits will get steadily worse.  You can change your behaviour but only if you want to.  I will be thinking of you, as I manage my own eating today.  Hope you do find a strategy or two to change your eating in the face of stress.  And I also hope you have a nice low stress weekend with lots of fun and relaxation.
