My husband and I were watching a woman on TV talking about running the Belfast Marathon and jokingly I said that I always wanted to do a marathon we both had a good laugh at the thought of this but then my husband said that he thought I would need at least 2 years to get ready .

I have told him I will do it next MAY ( 2017 ) so now i have to really start getting ready today was my first

day and i managed to do 3 1/2 Miles I have made out a new diet and exercise plan for the next month and I really hope to make this work any ideas, thoughts will be welcome. Meg

It sounds good Megbelle.

Joint the Couch to 5K forum, you will get all the help and encouragement you need.

I started here as a 68 year old unfit sedentary obese individual. I am now a fit slimmer 69 year young lady who runs three times a week. Yes, Capri running pants and fluoro top, a nice GPS watch and my iPod on. I usually do 5k but have managed up to 9K once. I am doing a Funrun of 11.3K next July and training towards it. Then who knows, maybe a half marathon and, eek I can't believe I am even thinking about it......a full Marathon?

At the moment I am trying the Galloway method to see if I can get further.

Moral of this story : of course you can do it. You are thinking about it, so you are on your way.... Download the free C25K through the NHS website and your friendly Laura will guide you along.

Do it, you have the will, even if you have to walk half the Marathon

In January 2014 I started couch to 5k, having previously lost some weight the year before. nhs.uk/Livewell/c25k/Pages/...

Then later that month a 'friend' entered me for a local marathon for my 59th birthday. So in August that year I did 26.2 miles. Note I didn't say ran. I jogged and walked. There are plenty of training programmes available on line and good support on healthunlocked.com/couchto5k.

Good luck & enjoy.

Sometimes it's good to have a goal, if you are really determined I am sure you will do it. Good luck to you. Xx

Hi Megbelle,

Welcome to the Weight Loss NHS community forum, and I hope you'll enjoy this great community. I notice that you've already got a new diet and exercise plan for the next month, so I hope it goes really well.

I'd like to give you a link to our Welcome Newbie post (which Moreless put together), and it gives you an idea of some of the things that people like about the community, and I hope you'll also get involved in any Challenges or activities you see in the forum that take your interest. In particular there is the 20,000 Leagues under the sea challenge (see Pinned posts - right-hand-side of the forum) as I'm sure you'll be clocking up some kms with your exercise, and that might be a Challenge that you'd enjoy contributing to?
