has anyone got a recipe for this dish? All the recipes I've looked at use cream!! I've got a lot of white fish fillets that I want to use up.

Hi Majorcagirl,

I have got the following recipes:

Recipe 1 is via a link, and has Cavolo Nero (which is black Kale) in it:

You could substitute for any kind of Kale (green or black depending on your preference).

The second recipe (which was from the back of the pack of Iceland fish pie mix) is as follows:

Luxury Fish Pie.

1kg Maris Piper potatoes, peeled and halved

Knob of butter

Splash of milk

25g butter

25g flour

4 spring onions, finely sliced

400ml milk

1 pack (600g) fish pie mix

1 tsp Dijon or English mustard

12g of chives, finely snipped

Handful frozen sweetcorn

Handful frozen peas

Handful grated cheddar

1.Preheat the oven to 200’C/180’C fan/gas mark 6. Put the potatoes in a saucepan and pour over enough water to cover them. Bring to the boil and then simmer until tender. When cooked, drain thoroughly and mash with a splash of milk and some butter. Season with ground black pepper.

2.Meanwhile, put the butter, flour and spring onions in another pan and heat gently until the butter has melted, stirring regularly. Cook for 1 – 2 mins. Gradually whisk in the milk. Bring to the boil, stirring to avoid any lumps and sticking at the bottom of the pan. Cook for 3 – 4 mins until thickened.

3.Take off the heat and stir in the cheese (if using), fish, mustard, chives, sweetcorn and peas. Spoon into an ovenproof dish.

4.Spoon the potato on top and sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Pop in the oven for 20 – 25 mins or until golden and bubbling at the edges.

Both those recipes make very tasty fish pies.

You could just substitute your white fish for the section where it says 'fish pie mix' - that would probably be fine!

Use creme friache and spring onions, best made with fish pie mix, use celeriac instead op potato, yummy and low cal, add a bit of wine, garlic too, fish stock

I don't use a recipe, I make the sauce with semi skimmed milk and cornflour with dried parsley and chives and I also put some sweetcorn carrots and peas in ith the fish and sweet potato mash on top. ☀️

I don't use a recipe either, I poach the fish in milk and use that to make a white sauce. I add broccoli to mine too :)

You can also use mashed butternut squash, or pumpkin for the topping :)

I enjoy sweet potato for the topping. If I am using an interestingly flavoured fish like smoked haddock or smoked cod, I bake this in the milk first to give the sauce a bit more flavour.

I used Tesco recipe But used water and left cheese as can't dairy.

I googled "low kcal fish pie" and came up with quite a nice one from the BBC at

I might add cooked and flaked to my cauliflower macaroni cheese recipe. I use 60g of pasta per person weighed raw and cooked plus lightly cooked cauli. The sauce I make with chopped onions gently cooked, skimmed milk, cornflour and a tsp of mustard per person as that seems to add to the cheesey flavour. Follow the recipe on the cornflour packet and use a quarter of a pint of sk milk per person. I would use 40g of grated cheese per person. I would put half of it into the sauce and keep the rest for the topping. Once everything was cooked I would combine it in a greased dish or tin. Smooth the top and combine breadcrumbs with the grated cheese as a topping. Decorate with sliced tomato and put into a hot oven till it is all warm and golden topped. If you try this and like it with some of your fish, you can make a big batch, freeze in individual portions and have a microwaveable meal of your own. It is worth packing flavour into the the sauce by cooking the fish, cauli and onion in small amounts of water and adding that water to your sauce as a replacement for some of the milk. Parmesan cheese can be mixed with others for this recipe to boost the cheeseyness. I usually use grated mature cheddar as my main cheese for this. Another thing you could do with your fish is Kedgeree. I gently cook in a couple of tsps of oil my favourite Indian spices with onion add cooked rice and frozen peas and then cooked fish. This is a great one for using up odds and ends of any fish in the freezer, but it is better with some smoked haddock. Add one chopped hard boiled egg per person. I like it topped with chopped fresh coriander and mango chutney. Hope you have fun with your new fish recipes and get some family favourites out of it.
