Google nhs bmi calculator and enter your details I think it will be about 2000 calories.

I recommend the nhs 12 week plan. Download a free app called myfitnesspal which helps to calculate your calorie and nutrition. It may say different intake to the nhs site but you can pick a figure between the two. See how you go.

All the best on your journey to a healthier weight and life.

Thankyou for your very helpful advice. I have downloaded the app, myfitnesspal, according to the calculations on there, I can eat 1,700 cals and get a weight loss of 1.5lbs a week. Eating 1,700 cals seems an awful lot, not that I am complaining !! Thanks again, Maggie

You need to think of weight loss as a series of steps going downwards rather than a slope. Also it's a long term thing. So when like you and me, there is a reasonable amount of weight to lose you will face several 'plateau's'. A plateau happens when your body gets used to the amount of cals you're giving it each day and you stop losing weight even though everything is the same. You'll need to lower your cal intake to a new lower amount to kick start the weight loss again. Also the less you weigh the less your body needs to just function. A 20st person will use more cals than a 10 st person. The less you weigh the less cals you need, I know it sounds obvious, but if you cut down to your lowest immediately you really have nowhere lower to go. I tend to reassess how much my cal intake needs to be with every stone I lose. Good Luck! xxx

Hi Maggie,

I'd advise checking a few different sites and take an average. I am just under 20 st and my average is between 1800 - 2000 cals a day.

Don't forget to check your allowances as you lose weight as obviously it will go down as you get lighter. Maybe check every 1/2 stone.

Have you set yourself any targets/goals yet? I'd recommend setting as many as you can - 1/2 stones, BMI numbers, certain weights in both stones & kilos. My list is quite long but really does help me stay on track & work towards the next target.

Good luck :)
