Planning to hire a fitness Instructor, any tips and advice?
I did this a few years ago and its quite an eye opener - the absolute best suggestion i can give is to get a recommendation about someone if you can- otherwise it can be a costly mistake especially if youre forced to book up for block sessions and down the line you realise they're not your cup of tea at all.
****A reputable trainer will give you a free session or at least a meet-up face to face so try before you buy is good advice****
Also as with most things in life think about what you want from the trainer,
eg someone to shout at you, someone to gently encourage you, a mixture of the 2 or maybe something else (know what you respond to best), age may also be a factor i had a new trainer once aged 23 and i just couldnt take her seriously because she didnt understand me, gender is also something to consider- most people i know tend to stick with their own gender in a trainer as they know its easier to wriggle their way out of things with the opposite sex- but horses for courses, if youre a member of a gym is your trainer willing to attend your gym (will it cost extra) and if youre not a member do you have a plan for when its raining/freezing/blowing a hooley? Do they provide eating plans inc in price? You also need to find out about their qualifications, their length of experience, their field of experience (eg general gym work/ outside work/ specialist gym work/ boxing etc, is this their f/t job?, and very importantly- do they have insurance- if no- run a mile- because if they dont take themselves seriously - how can you?
I've had good experiences and not so good too and my partner is actually a trainer but even he will tell you there are a lot of sharks out there who dont have passion in what they do -they dont really care about your results they just want your money.
I think the best thing i can suggest personally is to find a recommendation or failing that google "recommended p/t's in my area" then "screen" a few via the phone using your "personal criteria list" and arrange to meet up with say 3 of the best at different intervals on the same day or over a couple of days so you can compare and contrast. Like all relationships once the essential criteria are met (your phone screening) then its usually just a matter of who you "click" with and try not to sign-up for block-sessions straight away as you need to see where the relationship is going first (a lot of people change trainers)
When you get it right- its a fantastic experience
I wish you the very best of luck : )
I have a personal training session once a week and I love it. It's focused on you and what you need. I agree with marmite get a good one recommended. It's all down to if you click or not. I pay for each session not blocks.
