Hi everyone,

You may already have spotted that there will be a programme on BBC 1 at 23.05 tonight (6th January 2016) which is called "The Truth About Calories" - it was described as having Dr Chris van Tulleken who will be featuring and discussing "how we can all be healthier by eating smarter" - so I will definitely be watching.

Thought I'd post it so you know when it's on. Maybe record it if you don't want to stay up that late, and no doubt it will be on 'catch up' hopefully too.

Hope everyone is having a great evening and week so far.

Lowcal :-)

I hadn't spotted that either, so thanks for posting. I'll record it as I'm shattered after trying up my Kms today😅

Hi Jalapenolover101,

I must say I felt tired just reading everyone's posts in the Around the World Challenge today - but I am so impressed by everyone's dedication to the challenge.

You did really well in there. I can understand you're shattered!!! Have a good rest tonight.

Hi lowcal, isn't everyone great? And what a brilliant thread! It's such a motivation knowing everyone involved is committed to, simply, moving more.

I know I didn't clock up much yesterday but replying to the thread this morning really made me think!

I know I'm capable of doing more but I've never really cared if I didn't ( does that make sence? ) now I really want too👍 It's not just about letting the thread down, it's about getting healthier with you virtual friends and I'm all up for that😀😀😀

Me too, Jalapeno - it is a great thread - really makes a difference.

Hi Asics,

Yes, hopefully it will be interesting.

I haven't heard of the person doing the programme before.

He is great. He has a twin brother xand. They take part in trials as they are identical... like one cut out sugar one carbs. One did binge drinking one drank most days... etc.

They do children's programmes too.

Plus... sorry boys... he's very easy on the eye!! 😊

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to asics

Oh, I've seen them before then, as I did watch them doing those trials together in another programme. That will be great to see him again.

I'm going to rush off to watch the first programme now.

Hopefully we can chat about these programmes within the forum and share our thoughts etc.

Easy on the eye - awww, I'm sure he'd appreciate you saying that.. :-)

Hi Moreless,

Great! Please note the programme that Concerned mentioned too - 'Trust Me I"m a Doctor' (see Concerned's post above for the time).

Lots to watch.

I bet you're tired after doing all those responses in the Around the World Challenge - you are a true star. :-)

Hope you've had a good day and that you're having a bit of a rest tonight.

Lowcal :-)

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to Zest

I shall be recording the whole series of Trust me I'm a doctor too.

I may have to wait until the challenge is over to get the time to watch them though :)

I can't rest, I'm too busy clocking up the K's! :D

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to moreless

Moreless, you be careful, you don't want to burn out. We don't want to have to come and pick you up off the floor all bruised and battered from exhaustion...! Be careful and take care.

You're doing brilliantly on those Km's.

I'm going to watch that programme now, so I'll leave you in peace for a bit. :-)

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to Zest

Thanks for your concern Lowcal.

I'll take extra special care not to require picking up off the floor, I'd hate to be responsible for you all getting hernia's, slipped discs and pulled muscles ;)

I hope you enjoy the programme :)

in reply to Zest

You'll only have to pick her up, Lowcal, because she's fallen off her bike precariously balanced on that bloomin' stand...moreless isn't actually doing any pedaling !! ;-) :-D

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to

But I had to have crampons, rope, belay (I nearly wrote bidet and that was almost necessary too, cos I'm scared of heights ;) ) and oxygen to get up there!

in reply to moreless

Well, if your husband would only stretch to buying a second hand penny farthing, what do you expect ;-)

moreless profile image

I think the problem was that he told the young salesman that he needed a bike suitable for an older woman and that was what we ended up with :)

Hi Marianne,

Great, hopefully it will be interesting. Look out for the 'Trust Me I'm a Doctor' programme too - on BBC 2 at 8pm. An experiment on there about burning fat apparently.

Hope you're having a great evening and a good week so far.

Hi Lowcal, thanks for the info, on record. Evening very relaxing thanks. Been busy exercising and walking today, but not as long as you, very impressive.

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to Marianne0915

Glad you're enjoying your week Marianne - and that you had a relaxing evening after your exercise and walk.

Thanks for your kind words, but gym equipment burns off kms quicker than walking - so really comparing those things doesn't do justice to the effort put in to each activity. :-)

Hi Janette1,

Great! Also the programme called 'Trust Me I'm a Doctor' is featuring an experiment about fat burning - it's on BBC2 in 10 minutes (8pm).

Hope you enjoy the programme, and hope they're good.

Thanks Lowcal,

I will catch it on the iplayer tomorrow. Tomorrows the start of my new eating plan, am nervous, and really hoping it will work. Hopefully these programs will give me some ideas and things to ponder.

Janette :)

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to Janette1

Hi Janette,

Hope you enjoy it. I realised I'd already seen the programme about calories on a previous occasion, so it's a repeat - and they put it on at about 11.20pm (delayed start by 20 minutes) so I didn't watch it all in the end - but I did enjoy the 'Trust Me I'm a Doctor' programme - hope you enjoy them and that you enjoy your new eating plan - good luck!

Lowcal :-)

Hi Gracie1985,

I've not seen the 'calorie myth' - was it a programme?

Do note the other programme too (see Concerned's post just under mine about the BBC2 at 8pm programme).

Thanks for that link - I might see if I can get that book from the library. That's where I get most of the books to read - it's a great resource (the library).

Many thanks,

Hi Concerned,

I'm also hoping to see the 'Trust Me I'm a Doctor' programme too - they're doing an experiment about fat burning I think - should be good as well. Thanks for mentioning that one too.

Lots of interesting programmes on TV currently - I guess the New Year brings lots of interest in these areas. Hope they'll be good.

Most of us would probably do better to give the TV a miss and do something active, or sociable, or get some more sleep!

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to GoogleMe

Hi GoogleMe,

The great thing about life is we can usually choose our options and adjust our choices accordingly - you're right, being active, sociable and ensuring we get sufficient sleep are all great options.

Hope you're having a good week.

Lowcal :-)

GoogleMe profile image
GoogleMe in reply to Zest

They don't sound like 'options' to me but imperatives...

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to GoogleMe

Hi GoogleMe,

I merely meant that you can opt to do things as and when you want to. Generally I always try to get sufficient sleep for example, but sometimes I don't manage it due to various factors. Sometimes I opt to watch a TV programme because I enjoy it, and want to learn something or just enjoy something entertaining - sometimes I am socialising etc etc

That was all I meant by options.

Lowcal :-)

Lowcal :-)

Hairyman profile image
Hairyman in reply to Zest

Watcthed it on Iplayer (with weights in hands). Sure that I've watched it before and it was still only half truths about calories.

They did mention the Very important but too often ignored truth that the way our bodies use food is Very different to the way that calories are measured in the lab.

But there was nothing like enough stress on the way that pure carbohydrates cause our bodies to store fat around in our liver and around our vital organs.

That 400 calorie drink that they used on the unsuspecting victims must have been loaded with lots of sugar. If any of those twins subsequently develop type two diabetes they should sue the BBC as sugar laden drinks are the biggest culprit.

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to Hairyman

Hi Hairyman,

You've made some interesting points.

Lowcal :-)

Am on shift tonight, but hopefully will be able to turn one of the TVs on and catch it. Or some of it at least. I am sure there will be a buzz on here tomorrow if I miss it, lol. 😊

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to

Hi ShellieL,

Great, hope you manage to catch some or all of it - in 10 minutes there's another programme due to start called 'Trust Me I'm a Doctor' and that's about burning fat apparently as part of that programme. BBC 2.

Lots to watch, and hope you get chance to do so whilst on your shift.

Hope your shift goes well.

Thank you Lowcal, I didn't know it was on so thank you for this info. Will watch on catch up as its on way too late for me :-)

I really enjoy watching programs like that.

Having a great week so far thank you hope you are as well :-)

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to trafford1

Hi Trafford1,

"The Truth About Calories' programme turned out to be a repeat, as I remember seeing it last year sometime. Once I realised that I didn't continue watching, as it didn't start till 11.20pm in the end (delayed on the BBC) and I was very tired by then!

I enjoyed the 'Trust Me I'm a Doctor' programme. I won't say more about it, as I know you've not watched it yet. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, and the other one too (if you've not already seen it).

Great to hear you're having a great week. I have found that Lizzy's 'Around the World Challenge' has helped me to do far more gym sessions than I normally would - i.e. normally I'd be lucky to make it there twice in a week, whereas this week I've managed to go on consecutive days (at least for the start of this week...) I am amazed at how motivating it is, and it feels like we're all truely 'on board' - I love it!

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Lowcal :-)

Hi Trafford1,

I agree with you that Lizzy's Around The World Challenge is really motivating us - I would never have attended the gym as much as I have this week if it wasn't for that. It's really spurred me on! I'm enjoying it, but like you, I am feeling a bit tired out now - and I am also fortunate to have the day off tomorrow, so I am looking forward to a lovely long weekend - and time and opportunity to hopefully catch up with lots of things that I have been putting off.

I hope your new laptop arrives tomorrow, so that you can enjoy it and get back to normal typing.

Here's to enjoying our nice long weekends!

It turned out that it was a repeat actually - I stayed up to watch it and found out I'd already seen it last year sometime. I did enjoy it though, and hopefully those people who've not seen it yet will also enjoy it.

Hope you're enjoying some lovely sunny weather over there in Australia - we are having horrible weather over here currently - windy, rainy - not very good.

Hope you're having a great week.

Yesterday temperature was supposed to be hot day with 39c temperature. We ended up with 42.3c instead. Did 4 washings during the day and each washing was dry by the time I put the next one out. Went to next door friends for sundowner at 5.30 pm and jumped in their pool after getting out of ours! There is a big bushfire going on in the region fanned by 40 to 60k wind. One settlement has lost 97 houses. Sign of the summer....

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to nhs2015

Hi Nhs2015,

You got a lot of washing done, and great that you were able to move from pool to pool to cope with the heat.

The news of that bushfire is awful. Weather conditions can be kind or harsh sometimes.

Hope it gets a bit cooler and the bushfire is able to be extinguished.

Hi have just got it back on i player , have to say nothing new there, if you don't know roughly calories in food you will eat too many, you cant just guess especially at beginning until you get to know how much you are using up. I still think you have to stick to 1500 to allow for a treat . the exercise was interesting ie. the housework v the gym perhaps my walk in heavy rain this morning will count more than I thought!

Zest profile image

Funny really Lowcal that you mentioned this program yesterday because coming home late last night from friends and having a humongous bushfire in our region my husband decided to switch on TV news for updates, and accidentally come across a station with "the sugar conspiracy" starting and quickly clicked on the recorder. Smart man.

I just finished watching it this morning and found it very interesting. Maybe you can watch it on the net. Nothing really new for me but It is amazing how money talks. It is a bit frightening to realise how companies are fighting back and also the lack of ethics of all those Foundations and Councils which we trust. Example : At the time of the documentary, for $20.000 you can buy the Heart Foundation Logo tick to have your product recommended by the Heart Foundation. Amazing. I will never be able to look at any of those endorsements with a straight face👿

Zest profile image
ZestHealthy BMI in reply to nhs2015

Hi Nhs2015,

I've not seen 'The Sugar Conspiracy' yet, but I will definitely look out for it. I've read quite a bit about the negatives of sugar consumption, and I now do any baking without using any added sugar, and the taste is really good.

I am particularly shocked to hear about the payment to the Heart Foundation to get the logo tick to endorse a product - I will also be similarly sceptical now if I see such 'endorsements'.

Lack of ethics within Foundations and Councils is really bad.

Have a great weekend. It's nearly here.
