Struggling to keep weight off

Hey folks. Male, 39. Weight up and down, about 21 pounds heavier than I want but regularly drop 7 or 8 then back up. Never hit my goal. Haven't been my target weight in 9 years. 3 young kids too! Anyone similar issues or advice?

Seriously though you've come to the right place, people on here are amazing, lots of advice and inspiration, lots of guys as well as girls.

Have you looked at the 12 week plan? Loads of people rate it as well as the app myfitnesspal, it counts your calories.

I've not been my ideal weight for 10 years but this last year I've lost 2stone, so I'm one step closer, another 2 to go, but this site has helped me massively. Good luck.👍

Hello, firstly welcome, I recently joined too. So I know how you feel I've been between 11 and 12 stone for a while (though I haven't been actively trying to lose anymore weight until now) and want to lose around 2 stone to have a healthy BMI -not that its the most accurate measure.

Regardless of how much you need to lose, I believe it all depends on how focussed you are and how much you really want to lose the weight. With the right attitude and support you can do it. This forum will help keep you motivated. Don't try and do too much at once or make major changes to your diet and lifestyle that you cannot keep. Be realistic, everyone's life's are different.

I do not have kids myself but I know I'm always chasing my nephew around- calories must be burning surely! Look at it as an opportunity to be a role model for your children, showing them how to eat healthy, the importance of exercise (I'm a strong believer in Parkruns for families - they're great. Even if you don't think you can run...walking is fine too :)) and become a healthy individual whilst doing it!! I'm sure they'd love joining in with activities etc.

No advice at the moment as I have only just started on here last week myself, but I have a similar challenge / setup to you:

38 year old bloke looking to lose 3 stone this year, haven't been at my ideal weight for over 10 years and have two kids under 6 and a busy job.

Perhaps we could team up and help each other along ???

Hi there, this forum is brilliant, folk are really nice and supportive. I really recommend the weekly Monday weigh ins, it helps you to stay on track and kind of accountable. Every Monday morning look out for a post by Lowcal which says something like "Please join us for a Monday weigh in (followed by the date). You just comment and you've joined, no tests to pass or anything, it's that simple. In the past I've tried losing weight on my own and it never worked. This place is fantastic for motivation, truly!

I didn't know where to start really, so I went to the NHS BMI checker, put in my details and it told me what calories I should be eating for my height/weight/lifestyle. Then I started looking at what calories were in everything I ate and drank and I now keep a food diary as I'm obese and very inactive so I have to lose weight through food choices rather than through a lot of exercise right now. It's ok if you have the time and patience, it's really working for me, it just depends on what suits you best. Once I worked out what calories were in various regular family meals I saved the info so I don't have to calculate calories every single time. Took a while but I have most things I eat regularly saved so I can just copy and paste the info into my food diary for the day.

All that said, I think some folk have simply decreased their portion sizes as they saw they were eating just a little bit too much of everything. My diet needed a major overhaul which is why I went for scrutiny of everything I was eating - lol!
